It's been a week & I keep thinking about this. Laughing like it's some gotcha that infants cannot get vaccinated against measles & are entirely dependent on community protection, which they lacked in an outbreak that took off while Bhattacharya led CDC. He also gets the vaccine schedule wrong.

Blubblah, and rotary give my Mass roots away. it's not like I say these words very often, it's just that what you call the corresponding things. My kids, who score overwhelmingly San Francisco-LA assure me that I don't actually talk that differently from them.

Welp, there it is. The CDC is now officially manipulating data and their count of measles deaths in 2026 now stands at ZERO. My understanding of reportable diseases is that the CDC would usually use a state health department’s determination as the final say. The new CDC Director is failing us.

The discussion of how to count "measles deaths" versus "deaths attributable to measles" has been going on for a long time. There is nothing politicized about using the WHO standard definition "any death, except accidents and trauma, taking place within 30 days of the onset of rash"

Earth Systems asked that I make a flyer for my Fall class. My flyers are always lame, so I asked my TA if she could help make something that will actually activate student interest. I think she really outdid herself.

This is it. Insecurity arises from uncertainty and uncertainty means risk becomes inunsurable. The world that we are creating is increasingly uncertain, as we push all the systems that normally buffer us to their breaking point. Solidarity is indeed our only chance to take back a better world.

WSJ: Higher education is hitting a demographic cliff. The cliff:

The peak of the curve is 2025, with modest decline (hardly a cliff) in subsequent projections. A 13% decline in college enrollment is expected by 2041. This is not insignificant, but it is hardly a cliff. It is, of course, very bad news for many of the struggling private schools of the less-competitive category. It's not a cliff though.
