dante rossetti, on the other hand, was a world-class leaner and slumper, but never elevated any body part, preferring the decadent leg cross. here he is in a sequence ranging from almost succeeding to stand upright to somehow lying down on a very small chair (?)
as upright as he got (heavy lean on a balustrade)semi erect (excitedly declaiming to watts-dunton from a slouching seated position)so relaxed he's melting into his own clothes. legs crossed as usualsomehow sitting so relaxedly that he's made it look incredibly uncomfortable

There’s a sad beige boutique a few doors down from another store I sometimes shop at, and I swear my soul thinned the one time I walked in to see if it was really as… pale… as it seemed.

The Kimono Gallery @roger1952.bsky.social · 22/08/2026
Photographed by Atsushi Nakamura (Studio KJ), this obidome—a decorative sash clip worn at the front of a kimono—showcases the virtuosic mastery of Shibayama-zaiku, a traditional Japanese decorative inlay technique.
Shaped as an overlapping pair of folding fans (sensu), the piece serves as a miniature canvas overflowing with precious materials, featuring carved white mother-of-pearl (naga-gai), iridescent abalone (awabi), polished natural coral beads in rich shades of salmon and vermilion, and carved tortoiseshell or dark horn. The composition bursts with botanical life, anchored by a prominent central white rose and surrounded by cascading coral berries, smaller white blossoms with gold-inlaid pistils, and delicately veined leaves rendered in subtle shades of green and pink. Every microscopic element is meticulously hand-carved and set into a dark base frame, requiring generations of specialized knowledge in micro-mosaic inlaying. Historically developed in the late Edo period by Shibayama Dokan and brought to international acclaim during the Meiji era, such miniature works of art transformed practical kimono accessories into breathtaking showcases of luxury, material contrast, and meticulous craftsmanship.

Nice new edition of Mary Barnard’s Sappho! Not sure, but I believe I managed to get my copy ahead of the “street date.” Which is pretty funny for a 1958 translation of the surviving fragments of a ~2,600-year old poet, but there you go.

Today is Venn Day, in celebration of the mathematician John Venn, born on this day in 1834. To commemorate the occasion, here’s a poem in the form of a Venn Diagram.
Poem title: At the Intersection

The poem is divided into two overlapping circles.

The left-hand circle is titled ‘me’ and the text reads:
the day we
went out to have
an ice-cream, we said nothing
just let our silence melt in
the air as we walked across the common
our love never tiring at all

The right-hand circle is titled ‘you’ and the text reads:
we should
have talked it over but
nothing ever seems to get
in your fat head. You are so
common that I wish we’d never met
at all and I’d married Tim instead

In the intersection of the poem (where the two circles overlap), the text reads:
we
have
nothing
in
common
at all
