My dad has helped a friend who owns an orchard pick apples every fall since he retired. Mom left the classroom, but still does part-time student help stuff. People want to do stuff that’s helpful, just don’t want to be dependent on grinding themselves to dust doing it.

The best neighbor I’ve ever had was a retired farmer whose wife had wanted to move into the city to be closer to the kids. Literally just wandered the neighborhood seeing if people had little projects they’d like help with or offering to hit their lawn with his riding mower.
