Thanks to the 24 people from across the city that have sent this letter! This legislation isn't just about Pioneer Square, it's about whether SDOT can make our streets safer or not!

It's really amazing how family bikes are just a thing that people use to get around in every city now.

The much anticipated connection between Route 7 and the 2 Line is not that popular. Only 200 passengers board a Route 7 bus at Judkins Park station each weekday. This is lower than many stops that Metro proposed removing in the RapidRide R project (eg: Andover, Bayview, Charles).

I'm trying to figure out if this ferries captain who wrote a Times op-ed about the sick-out actually thinks we could build bridges to replace state ferry routes.
Washington created its ferry system in 1951 as a stopgap until bridges were built. In 1992, Vashon islanders turned out by the thousands against a proposed bridge because they wanted to stay small. That’s their right, but it has a price, and taxpayers statewide are paying it. If the state won’t pay to run ferries properly, it should build the bridges or ask the counties that chose ferries to share the cost. What it can’t do is keep running ferries on the cheap and explaining canceled sailings.

People that live on neighborhood streets don't want them to be used for cut through traffic. Drivers don't even like the cut through routes. Why isn't Seattle doing more to snip the cut through routes?
r/seattlewa reddit post

title: Seattle has taught me that the fastest route and the least annoying route are two completely different things

I started noticing this because Google Maps kept giving me routes that were technically 3–5 minutes faster, but somehow left me significantly more irritated by the time I arrived.

Yesterday it wanted me to save four minutes by cutting through a bunch of narrow residential streets, making an awkward unprotected left, crossing an arterial, then merging back onto basically the same road I had just left. I ignored it, stayed on the boring main route, hit a couple lights, and got there without having to negotiate six tiny intersections and somebody's Subaru sticking halfway out of a driveway.

I've realized I do this all over Seattle now. I'll happily add five minutes to avoid certain left turns, weird five-way intersections, bridge approaches, or that one street where parked cars turn two lanes into 1.3 lanes and everyone just improvises.

At some point I stopped asking which route is fastest and started asking which route requires the fewest decisions.

I can't tell if this is Seattle-specific or if I've just become an old man about driving much earlier than expected, but there are absolutely places here where an extra mile feels faster than saving three blocks.

Do you want the City Traffic Engineer to be able to implement safety improvements on all streets in our city without having to beg historic boards for permission? You should send this letter to the Pioneer Square Preservation Board asking them to support letting the traffic engineer do their job.

> I heard the RapidRide line does two things simultaneously — runs less frequently than the 7 and has 20 less stops. This is simply not a true statement. The rapid-ride minimum standard is not the planned service standard for the R.

The tiny enclave of Beaux Arts Village (pop. 310) is on the cusp of triggering the Builder's Remedy next week, unless the town council approves interim zoning changes that get the city into compliance with the Growth Management Act.
If the town is not able to adopt interim regulations consistent with the HAA requirements
by October 13, 2026, the Builder’s Remedy in RCW 36.70A.835(11) will go into effect in
the Town of Beaux Arts Village. It will remain in effect until the town submits an adopted
comprehensive plan and development regulations that are consistent with the HAA
requirements and Commerce issues a decision of compliance.
We extend our continued support to the Town of Beaux Arts Village in achieving the goals of
growth management.

Any laws about public space utilization also generally fall into this. 1. Any business owner can block the right of way with concrete without asking permission 2. It is difficult (impossible) to get a public patio put in on a road.

Jason @jrock08.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
You can see this with open container laws where two things are simultaneously true. 1. I can drink in any public space I feel like without consequence. 2. I can't buy a drink from a bar and walk to the park.

One of the worst parts about living in a city is the dichotomy of "quality of life" laws. Busy bodies misuse poorly written code to shut down nice things that improve quality of life Police refuse to enforce the laws against public space mal use (eg drag racing) that actually hurt quality of life.
