Look I'm sympathetic to many arguments in favor of popular genre fiction (some of it is quite good, it's okay to like things that are comfortable, its dismissal often reflects prejudice toward its readers, etc etc) but I just can't with the people who are like "how very dare you *judge* art!!!??"

Wendy Carlos should be on the 20 dollar bill. There should be a 50-foot-tall, solid-gold statue of her in Pawtucket. You should be able to buy all her albums in any format you want and a line of custom branded synths. She should be a household name along with Bob Moog.

How much of this is just people working from home? Because while that's a double edged sword for sure, it's not really a bad thing overall. It'd be nice to see a chart that separates that out.

Hot Corn Summer has passed into fall, but I'll still be smashing that repost button on notable corns. The most Midwestern and the most American of crops, subject of our first national mock epic (Joel Barlow's *The Hasty Pudding*, about grits) ... is swole corn the Joe Rogan of the left?

"Require full books" is ranked 25th out of 30 here, only a few above "Private school vouchers" and "Allow A.I. use." The explanation? "Some experts saw this as common sense, though there is little existing research."

Poking around Henry Blake Fuller some more ... he gets an outraged letter from a guy whose name he coincidentally used for an unpleasant character in *The Cliff Dwellers*, for which he graciously apologizes. The guy accepts and says he's just sick of his wife's book club making fun of him.

McCarthy hearings are like Poetry 101 classes, but instead of asking "what did the poet mean" in a loose, open way, amenable to multiple theoretical frameworks, you get to cross-examine the poet with the goal of throwing them in jail...
Mr. Cohn. I am trying, Mr. Hughes, because I think you have
gone pretty far in some of these things, and I think you know
pretty well what you did. When you wrote something called
``Ballads of Lenin,'' did you believe that when you wrote it?
    Mr. Hughes. Believe what, sir?
Mr. Cohn. Comrade Lenin of Russia speaks from marble:

On guard with the workers forever--
    The world is our room!

Mr. Hughes. That is a poem. One can not state one believes
every word of a poem.
Mr. Cohn. I do not know what one can say. I am asking you
specifically do you believe in the message carried and conveyed
in this poem?
Mr. Hughes. It would demand a great deal of discussion. You
can not say yes or no.
Mr. Cohn. You can not say yes or no?
Mr. Hughes. One can if one wants to confuse one's opinions.
Mr. Cohn. You wrote it, Mr. Hughes, and we would like an
answer. This is very important. Did you or didn't you?
Mr. Hughes. May I confer with counsel, sir?
    Mr. Cohn. Surely.
    [Witness conferred with his counsel.]
Mr. Hughes. Would you ask me the question again, sir?
    [Question read by the reporter.]
Mr. Hughes. My feeling is that one can not give a yes or no
answer to such a question, because the Bible, for example,
means many things to different people. That poem would mean
many things to different people.
Mr. Cohn. How did you intend it to mean?
Mr. Hughes. I would have to read and study it and go back
twenty years to tell you that.
Mr. Cohn. Read it right now. Is it your testimony that you
can not recall it?
Mr. Hughes. I could not recite it to you, no, sir. I can
not.
That, sir, in my opinion is a poem symbolizing what I felt
at that time Lenin as a symbol might mean to workers in various
parts of the world. The Spanish Negro in the cane fields, the
Chinese in Shanghai, and so on.
Mr. Cohn. Is that what it meant to you at that time?
Mr. Hughes. That is what it meant to me at that time.

There's a persistent conflation of consciousness and thought in the Stancil AI philosophy Discourse. As far as I can tell, contra many critics, WS is saying LLMs think, not that they're conscious. People want to argue consciousness but "thought without consciousness" is more interesting.

I also got the Listener. It's interesting to link this language-centrism to reading aloud, which is something I love but isn't the heart of it for me. It's more about language as a web of meaning, and feeling the vibrations along that web in directions that sometimes have little to do with sound.

Another thought after finishing: the frame story takes Milo from being bored in his room to being excited by his mental universe as he sits in a comfy chair in that same room. It's the same arc as "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud," from bad "loneliness" to good "solitude."

Yes, there's a danger of overlooking this self-fashioning side. But on the other hand, self-fashioning that isn't also world-fashioning becomes callow Eat Pray Love self-help. The task is to maintain the circuit between self- and world-fashioning, a circuit that AI threatens to break.

We talkin Marlowe's Faust or Goethe's, though? In Marlowe Mephistopheles just tricks Faust out of his soul, but in Goethe he's a kind of productive frenemy who, despite trying to damn Faust, leads him on a transformative cosmic and personal journey, full of horrors, that ends with salvation.
