AI as designed is basically a vapid people-pleaser, which will respond to a question by vomiting up a quote from its trove of skim-read sources, in the hope of snaring someone who thinks being well-read = intelligence Of course, no country would be dumb enough to put that in charge, right?

I just saw a post from some guy saying that traditional music is “over” because AI music will provide “infinite personalised songs”. I want music that reflects the misshapen thoughts of another human being, not the output of an algorithmic average.

Say what you like about 2008, but back in the day, when some creep with no house training decided to rip people off and crash the economy out of greed, arrogance and general contempt for others, at least they didn’t clog up the news cycle every other week to cry about how maybe they were “too smart”

Nothing of value has ever been implemented without a negotiation between people who know the risks and have insights from many different perspectives. Like you say, most people know that when you’re loudly asked to swallow something whole, you’re being scammed and should follow the money

These articles all seem to argue that “it’s going this way so we should accept it” Which ignores the fact that all of the things we value came from movements that forced concessions, from unions, to giving women the vote, and ending slavery We do not make society better by complying in advance

I used to do workshops on writing for the web. I often reflect that, in suggesting “rules” for writing (short sentences, simple wording), I encouraged people to believe that writing was a puzzle that could be solved in 3 steps, as opposed to a greased pig with no recall that climbs on your furniture

It’s definitely declined from “this is what this means from this perspective” to “I’m a guy that will not tolerate anyone dissing Ricky gervais” levels of fandom

There are more insane and insidious publications in the mediasphere. But for me, the economist is entertaining because it’s like reading the blog of someone who’s totally bought into a fandom and made it their personality Except the fandom is “a fantasy idea of capitalism that never existed”

I can’t remember when I signed up for the economist’s newsletter. But I have an unhealthy amount of screengrabs in my iPhone photos, because I frequently send curated gems to @brokenbottleboy.bsky.social to ruin his day

My generation grew up with this vestigial idea that something in - say - The Times could be seen as vaguely credible as it was a paper with reputation, standards and a sense of human decency This generation will hopefully not share that delusion, as they have never known a world where that was true

John Hill @jpjhill.bsky.social · 06/09/2026
If there’s one thing I’d stress to the next generation, it’s that this bilge is not normal, and it is not how adults should behave. It is the result of a hatred that has been deliberately and relentlessly pumped into the country, like sewage in the rivers. And you do not need to tolerate it”

Seriously, anyone who spends any significant time in the orbit of British columnists needs the same high-risk health monitoring as someone handling radioactive waste “I’m sorry Janice, we’ve done the tests, and you seem to have a virulent case of Terf Lung”

People wang on endlessly about teaching children to survive in the world they will grow up in I’d argue the most important thing UK kids need to learn is not so much “do more AI shite” and more “never go anywhere near an article in a newspaper without putting on a hazmat suit first”

Australia’s eSafety commissioner buried a report (released Friday afternoon) that shows the under 16 social media ban didn’t tangibly reduce teen social media use, and also resulted in parents tuning out of kids usage. We traded our privacy for no reason. theconversation.com/more-than-80...

This is so, so bad. She’s taken the very narrow point that domestic drilling may result in oil and gas with a slightly lower carbon footprint than some imports and extrapolated it out to make sweeping claims about UK emissions increasing that are entirely false. So deeply unserious.

Le Guin on the idea that there is a secret to getting good at writing.
I will dispose of the first myth as quickly as possible. The “secret” is skill. If you haven’t learned how to do something, the people who have may seem to be magicians, possessors of mysterious secrets. In a fairly simple art, such as making pie crust, there are certain teachable “secrets” of method that lead almost infallibly to good results; but in any complex art, such as housekeeping, piano-playing, clothes-making, or story-writing, there are so many techniques, skills, choices of method, so many variables, so many “secrets,” some teachable and some not, that you can learn them only by methodical, repeated, long-continued practice — in other words, by work.
