Russian drone strikes Ukraine’s National Academy of Sciences in Kyiv
A Russian drone struck the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine building in central Kyiv on September 28, sparking a fire, according to local Telegram channels and the Ukrinform news agency, which cited the Academy’s press service.
Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klychko said the drone crashed into a non-residential building in the Shevchenkivskyi district, in the heart of the capital. He reported that the strike caused a fire and that emergency services were dispatched to the scene.
Local Telegram channels reported that people were still inside the building as first responders from the State Emergency Service arrived.
Ukrinform reported a direct hit by a Russian drone on the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine building.
“It was a direct hit. Many were injured. Half the building is gone—this was an old part of the complex. The fire inside is massive; people were literally falling from windows. Everything around is shattered. It’s a workday, so many were inside,” the Academy’s press service said.
Oleksandr Sazanovych, head of the Shevchenkivskyi District Administration, later reported that there were fatalities and injuries at the site of the strike.
“I am at the site of the strike in Shevchenkivskyi district. Unfortunately, there are injured and dead. All emergency and appropriate services are working at the scene,” Sazanovych said, urging citizens not to approach the area and not to interfere with emergency operations.
According to the Kyiv City State Administration , a woman was killed in the Russian attack on Shevchenkivskyi district.
Klychko also said that drones had crashed in three areas of the capital. In the Obolonskyi district, a drone fell on non-residential property, prompting a response from emergency services.
He also reported a drone strike on non-residential property in the Darnytskyi district.
The National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine is the country’s leading self-governing scientific organization, established in Kyiv on November 27, 1918. Its first president was the renowned scientist Volodymyr Vernadskyi .
The site of the strike houses the Academy's Presidium, including the Presidium assembly hall.
The Academy brings together scientific institutions and conducts both basic and applied research across natural, technical, social, and humanitarian sciences.
As of 2026, its membership includes 175 full academicians, 391 corresponding members, and 85 foreign members.
