It started by chatting with Anke 15y ago (!) on how governments may negotiate treaties not because of spillovers, but to tie hands of future governments => (a) coalitions can be larger (b) we provide a unique theory of "conventions" (c) the Paris Agreement won't unravel even if US withdraws🙂

30 years after arriving in the US, I just resigned from Northwestern and we sold our house. We are an American family, I became a citizen in 2014, and until recently did not expect to ever leave. But now, this no longer feels like the right place to raise a family and pursue a research career.

to be honest the other 2 are: various health / wellness / well-roundedness reasons, and my sense that our real contributions to science and scholarship are our 2-3 best papers and our advising/teaching, to me it makes more sense to try to do less but better

even with this attitude, of course at times my papers have been sloppy and had errors, failures to cite, etc. but i know we tried hard and we corrected when pulled up short. been clear to me for a while that others who are working faster and doing more are often or even typically much sloppier.

Maybe journals should have a policy that data from anonymous sources will be verified by the journal before publication. The editor could contact the firm, to verify that it exists and that the study was conducted as stated. @aeadata.bsky.social is this feasible or am I missing something?

After one year of waiting, we finally got a response from the Journal of Population Economics about our replication of "Banning the purchase of sex increases cases of rape: evidence from Sweden", confirming the major coding error that invalidates the main results, but not retracting the paper. 1/2
