Kemi Badenoch takes on Suella Braverman and Reform over Englishness:

We should demand fairness for the whole tax and benefits system, not just the parts of it that either impact us or somehow feel more just

Jon Loveridge @jonloveridge.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Correct. There is a total disconnect as to how we think about in work benefits vs. pensioner benefits and the role of means testing. The WFA changes Labour tried to make were clumsily handled, but compare that reaction to the objectively inequitable childcare thresholds…worlds apart

Jon Loveridge @jonloveridge.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Precisely. And you either agree with an equitable tax and benefits system or you don’t. Currently households earning up to a combined £199k a year can receive more childcare benefit than a household earning £100k. This is obviously nonsense to anyone who looks at it properly

There will never be enough quality candidates for a rightwing party if you make it a condition for entry that you sign up to a position that almost everyone earning above 70k disagrees with:

For the Tories specifically it’s hard to work out who this is for. Reform can at least acknowledge Brexit has failed & try to blame the Tories. People like Lam just continue to deny observable reality. For who & to what end is not at all clear - the cohort of potential voters who agree must be tiny

Policies that support childcare universally, will lead to working age mothers to have more choices around their careers and deal with tax cliff edges to build a more equitable tax system, wherever they occur, are good policies, regardless of who comes up with them or what the narrative might seem

Im ready for the usual slew of “people earning £100k can afford it” without truly understanding the details; 1. The £100k is based on an individual, a household can earn £199k a year and get more support than a household earning £100k 2. When alongside the £100k tax taper this is a woeful cliff edge

I think there’s probably a more equitable approach, like instead of setting the limit at £100k based on one individual it could be a higher number and based on household earnings but that said, this is a good policy suggestion from Badenoch. This £100k limit alongside the income tax taper is absurd

New GB News accounts are out. Here are their losses to date. Or "spent political donations" if you prefer
Line chart titled 'GB News has lost £142m to date', showing cumulative losses in pounds rising steadily from around £3m in 2020/1 to £142m by 2025. The red line climbs most steeply between 2021/2 and 2023/4, reaching roughly £110m, then flattens as growth slows towards £142m. Macron: “Brexit is the biggest lie of the last 30 years. “Those who said, "We will be richer" - eight points of GDP less ten years later. "”We will solve the problem of immigration" - it is more complicated than before. "”We are going to crush it in international trade" - it is worse.”

...Put those together and the result is that over 15 years the triple lock has pushed up the state pension in cash terms by more than growth in average earnings and more than the increase in prices...4/5

Yes, the signs were there, you are right. And obviously the whole case has dragged on for way too long. But when the fans have had the club and it’s entire leadership state for almost 2 decades that no rules were broken I think it’s understandable why most fans took this at face value
000
Jon Loveridge @jonloveridge.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
I think there is an argument about if the rules were/are right, but it’s a separate argument. Chelsea have broken rules recently and were punished. I’m unsure on Aberdeen. To my recollection United and Blackburn have never broken any rules or at least not nothing like to this scale

I think there are financial dark arts everywhere in football - but this, to the tune of just shy of £1bn, over a decade, to basically cement a dominant position for the preceding decade, is on another scale completely. It’s not apples v apples with anything else in the PL era

The sad thing about comments like this, look at what Mancini said also. Mancini, Soriano - it doesn’t matter to these people. They’ll take their money and success and just move on. It’s the clubs legacy fans and really the players who have been totally let down

Jon Loveridge @jonloveridge.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
So really, the only thing removed is the 3rd bit of the lock tying to wages. The 2.5% or CPI is maintained. Still very generous tbh. Will be interesting to see the calculations behind how much this is expected to save

Jon Loveridge @jonloveridge.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Good. Still pretty generous. Let’s see how much this is misrepresented and misunderstood then
101
Jon Loveridge @jonloveridge.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Very much my view - an awful lot of the opposition to removing the triple lock will come from people who don’t understand, have not tried to understand or have been misinformed about what this actually entails and why it’s necessary
000
Jon Loveridge @jonloveridge.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Yes - in 15-25 years down the line you have late Gen X’ers & early Millenials starting to retire who came after DB pensions were widespread but before auto-enrolment, there may well be a need to look at it again - but it’s the right decision for now…in fact it should have happened already
010
Jon Loveridge @jonloveridge.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Given the current wealth distribution, that many current pensioners have benefited hugely from DB pensions, a housing market boom from 1995-2020 and pensioner poverty has reduced greatly in the last two decades, I’m not sure how you argue it’s not the best decision for now
110
Jon Loveridge @jonloveridge.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
The thing about the triple lock, ending it doesn’t mean pensions won’t keep pace with inflation pretty broadly - it just means some years it might fall behind wage or price growth and it’s just not guaranteed to out perform both

I should say what you *think* is electorally attractive

Jon Loveridge @jonloveridge.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
If the last 25 years has taught us anything, it’s that if you govern solely through the lens of what is electorally attractive, then the country’s prospects will erode. We can see this, it’s clearly evidenced

These anonymous MPs saying it's 'electoral suicide' to tinker with the triple lock. Exactly the type who got us into this mess: unwilling to lead, unwilling to recognise reality for fear of offending voters, unwilling to solve long-term problems if it presents the slightest short-term risk.

A certain section of the right can see the RAF Fairford story as a win/win in terms of narrative - its either 1) our borders are not safe if these people have come from abroad or 2) look at these domestic terrorists refusing to integrate and conform. The reality, as ever, will always be more nuanced

I made the mistake of putting my previous house on for more than it’s actual value - the problem I created was then you have to discount more aggressively to ensure you maximise the Rightmove rules/algo and get exposure. It can be a huge false economy

The govt should take this opportunity to explain to the public in painfully specific detail - the clamour to reduce immigration that has been delivered, will cost everyone in reduced spending or increased taxes to compensate for it. If this is what people want, fine, but understand the trade offs

'Which taxes do you want to raise instead?' should be the default question to anyone who calls for reductions in immigration.
