Speaking to PubliCola last year, staff who were involved in the creation of the report expressed intense frustration at being asked to turn their office into one called a “propaganda arm of the city” by the Harrell Administration. “We tried to soften the language to appease them,” that staffer said, but the report ended up making claims that just weren’t supported by the data. “I’m not going to spend my waking outs doing that,” the staffer said; that staffer, and another staffer who worked on the report, quit their jobs and left the city over what they saw as interference in their work that compromised its integrity.

One of the biggest myths is that men rape by mistake. Like, "Oh, they need consent training." But research is very clear: Sexual violence is not a mistake. It is an intentionally made decision by people who know they don't have consent. They just don't prioritize consent over things like status, power, domination, and sexual gratification.
For my research, I got a certificate of confidentiality from the National Institutes of Health, so my notes couldn't be subpoenaed. One of the reasons I call them perpetrators in my work is because every single person I interviewed confessed in that context. The first question I would ask them was, "When you received that email from Title IX that you were under investigation, did you know what it was about?" Every perpetrator I interviewed said "yes." If sexual assault were a miscommunication, you would be wondering, What have I possibly done wrong? That is not the way that any of them reacted because they knew.

In the 1980s, WA State Rep Cal Anderson heard cops were hassling people in gay bars, so he went when cops were there & dared them to give him trouble. They backed down. Not as high-stakes as standing against tear gas, but still the kind of leadership we're entitled to demand from elected officials.

One of the worst parts about living in a city is the dichotomy of "quality of life" laws. Busy bodies misuse poorly written code to shut down nice things that improve quality of life Police refuse to enforce the laws against public space mal use (eg drag racing) that actually hurt quality of life.

Toyota's unease at being associated with the Taliban and Al Qaeda is evident. In its September statement, the company said,
'Toyota does not have a sales or distribution channel in Afghanistan, and we do not export vehicles to that country."
Somewhat less laconic was Wade Hoyt, Toyota's spokesman in New York, who put the best corporate spin on the situation this week.
"It is not our proudest product placement," he said. "But it shows that the Taliban are looking for the same qualities as any truck buyer: durability and reliability."

Wrote about Victor Wembanyama creating a stir and finding his voice, while channeling at least a piece of his former coach. Sunday column, a day early: www.expressnews.com/sports/spurs...
The little pauses bring back memories. They come during the two or three seconds between a question and an answer, while a man seated in front of a Spurs banner considers how much he can say.
Or how much he should say. Or whether it would be safer not to say anything at all.
In that seat used to be a different man, an older one who didn't mind ticking folks off, whether they were fellow millionaires or paying customers. A man who decided there were certain things people needed to hear, whether they wanted to hear them or not.
Occasionally during those pauses, that man reckoned it was worth it to speak what he believed to be the truth. Sometimes he caught grief for it, but he understood the power of his own voice.
Now, little by little, a younger man is learning the power of his.

I don't think this helps solve the problem at all - but it is very much the reason why I get so frustrated by paywalls, even as I acknowledge their necessity

No matter how many subscriptions I can afford to pay for, I'll encounter more links I can't access than those that I can - and I can't assume anyone I might want to share news with can access it either, unless the site has easy generous gift link policies

So it's not just that things are more expensive than free (relative to the 2006-2018 era), the ability of a single household to stay on top of the news in a broad sense feels out of reach.

Doctor J @jonathan-ehrich.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Not to mention, instead of getting a periodical everyone in the house can read, each individual now needs their own subscriptions to guarantee access.

Doctor J @jonathan-ehrich.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
...it also feels like now you need a separate subscription to cover every news topic you might want to track - politics, sports, etc - on top of multiple subscriptions for any areas you *really* want to be on top of.

Something remarkable is happening: James Talarico is running an expansively pro-immigrant campaign in Texas, a state Trump won by 14 points, speaking in Biblical terms about our duty to "the stranger." And it's resonating. That's seismic. 1/ (new piece) newrepublic.com/article/2160...

In Texas, Something Seismic Is Happening—and It’s All Trump’s Fault
Thanks to the economy and ICE, Trump has lost Texas Latinos. And James Talarico is developing a humane pro-immigrant message that’s resonating—even in this ultra-Trumpy state.
