Trying to share more writing via Patreon vs BlueSky threads. Everything is totally free & likely to stay that way bc we’re all broke AF & at this point I’m still able to feed myself, which is a massive privilege as a disabled creative person these days. www.patreon.com/jomaselli/po...

I recently heard that many seasonal ponds aren’t returning in some parts of the world. It makes me wonder if the water can tell the future.

Might need to take a break from social media bc the Cornell stuff is really too much for me on top of everything else right now. Sending lots of love out into the universe & support to all those struggling w this, esp ppl who are responsible for young ones. It is a lot.

I remember a really frustrating conversation with a generally decent cishet white guy about a news story where a woman was roofied. he went off about wishing he could beat that guy up to avenge her, and I was like "how about start with calling out your friends' sexist tweets?" and he was like 😳

Been sitting here waiting for the matriarchy to arrive in the world & never noticed it arriving in myself. I want you to read that again. Because I have a feeling the same has happened to many others.

There’s something to be said for how most of the political spectrum can unite around hounding some lesbians over niche drama in their spaces but huge segments of society are silent about pervasive campus rape impacting a huge population of primarily youngwomen

This is a good example. It assumes that the person can afford the price of whatever shop is available, for one thing. It also misunderstands that finding someone to work on your car is, for a lot of people, a social relation as much an economic one.

Realizing that unless someone has a true & honest baseline respect for children, they probably aren’t going to do very well as a parent or teacher. Our society discourages us from having true respect for children, or from acting from that respect, & that is bad for all kids.

Sincerely curious to find out: if you are a dad raising a son right now, how is this Cornell case hitting you? What are you doing or saying? Not trying to be a cop just trying to understand how these moments are processed by others who are different from me.

Beautifully said, thank you. I feel so much guilt when I’m not doing something to try to get better even though there isn’t anything I can actually do. I’m trying to learn how to be humble, let go of control, give in to the quiet, but it’s still a scary prospect to me.

It’s hard not to worry about those gentle souls. I tell myself that the foundation of confidence & calm we are providing him by not problematizing sensitivity or gentleness will yield more resilience over time. Being reactive & aggressive makes dealing w aggression harder than being calm & quiet.

TBC I’m a 5’7” woman who would dive into the middle of a fray btw two 6’ teen boys at work when I was only 130lbs (not smart) so I have no qualms putting myself on the line like that to protect a kid so idk

The other day I told my son that it’s ok to punch another boy who is beating up a smaller or weaker kid & then I was like wait is that really OK & now seeing this Cornell shit & all the collective PTSD of women everywhere in response I’m like yeah, that’s right.

Really angry that we still not only allow but encourage men to be the shittiest possible version of a human being & then reward them for it like that is literally what is wrong with the entire world.
040
persephone @jomaselli.ca · 27/09/2026
I’m not ready to put it all into words bc I’m still processing it, but suffice to say: there is a lot of pain, shame, & grief that I have heard echoed by many men wrt how they were raised amongst those who would not or simply could not conform, & a lack of modelling for how to raise this gen.

But then he recently had an experience w a boy who was being very violent and aggressive at a private event, & as we’ve been unpacking that w him, we’ve also been unpacking w each other. A lot has come up about boys & men, & the pressure to identify either as or w bully v victim, winner v loser. +

Thankfully he is now in an environment where aggressive behaviour is not tolerated & we have found those spaces intentionally. We have helped him navigate & use his voice & agency to maintain safety & boundaries for himself & others. +

My son has struggled to make friends with most other boys until last year. He did not like aggressive & rough play, not just bc he didn’t want to get hurt, but even more so bc as a relatively tall & strong kid for his age, he didn’t want to hurt anyone even accidentally. +

And to the men reading this, please know I am saying that with love, as the mother of a young boy, as someone whose best friends over the years have included many different men. A lot of you know what I mean & will agree with me. Men are not ok. Ppl who are OK do not behave this way or allow it.

persephone @jomaselli.ca · 27/09/2026
Men have never gotten over the idea that women have equal access to society—especially institutions associated with power & privilege, like higher education. They believe they are more deserving bc of the very predatory & violent behaviour they’ve been taught to value. Men are not OK. None of them.

The Cornell thing is reminding me of (1) the Canadian Juniors Hockey Team SA case (very similar & all were acquitted by a judge here in Ontario) & (2) my time serving on my university’s Non-Academic Student Discipline Panel (the reason the outcomes of these cases never shock me)

TBC: I was not doing my BEd during any of this. I was just studying & working under the Dramatic Arts & English departments (more the former than the latter) for my BA. Sometimes I think back to how high the quality of Ontario education across divisions used to be & it makes me extremely sad.

I was so fortunate to go to what was at that time a small school that also had programming dedicated to post-secondary educational instruction & assessment practices. I also worked there as a TA & took their certificate for new TAs & instructors & it was fantastic.

It was so freeing to be able to engage in so many different ways & to have access to multiple entry points, & to know we were being treated as individuals during observations & assessments. He was also very encouraging but maintained high relative standards, expecting progress & effort.

I had a prof for one semester of university French who graded us based on personal progress & mastery. He also gave us many different ways to interact with our language learning so that if one way didn’t help us demonstrate those things, another would. It was one of the best experiences ever.

My big thing was also pathways, like seeing each child as on a unique path vs following a preordained path. But that would involve too much creative & critical thinking, & the majority of folks who make it thru the education, training, & politics to ed leadership can’t have or apply those things.

persephone @jomaselli.ca · 27/09/2026
Yeah, the universal & flexible design stuff is the type of stuff I’ve learned about over & over again in terms of my BEd & additional qualifications, & I do know some folks w more patience & grace than I who have been pushing & keep pushing for change at the policy & structural levels but it’s v few

persephone @jomaselli.ca · 27/09/2026
We shouldn’t be gatekeeping various interventions that we know work for most kids. Accommodations also shouldn’t be dedicated to combating things we know no longer work. Structural change is needed, & we have known this for about 50 years.

I burned myself out in part bc I tried so hard to overcompensate for all of the failures & rigged aspects of the system. It made me so anxious & depressed. I wish we could talk about this more. We know how to make school better but society just doesn’t care bc it costs more $

persephone @jomaselli.ca · 27/09/2026
There is so much research out there to support the application of a ton of what we call “special” education to all kids. Something that made teaching difficult for me was knowing we know better, & having to do things that I know don’t work, & having zero control over the conditions that matter. +

The amount of Amazon workers relying on SNAP and Medicaid has nearly tripled since 2020 — while Amazon’s annual profits soared by over 550%. It’s the same story everywhere: corporate profits are at record highs, while workers’ share of the economy is at a record low. We must unrig the system.

I used to think I didn’t want haters at my funeral but now I’m thinking naw, let everyone party. But you gotta choose a room: love or hate. The love side gets to toast my life & the memories I’ve left behind. The hate side gets to toast that I’m gone & roast me all they want. I’m dead I don’t care.
