Bah gawd that's Mitt Romney's music! (from @johnsides.bsky.social and Lynn Vavreck's "The Gamble)
Despite early concerns that Obama would be vastly outspent in the fall campaign, several things helped him remain competitive on the airwaves. For one, Romney’s reliance on advertising by super-PACs and outside groups put him at a disadvantage because those groups pay higher rates than candidates. Under the law, candidates are entitled to the “lowest unit rate”—that is, the lowest rate that stations charge to air an ad at any particular time—during the sixty days prior to the November election. But outside groups do not get this advantage and were often paying several times more. For example, on September 23, the Obama campaign paid $4,500 for a thirty-second ad to air during 60 Minutes in the Tampa media market. The GOP group American Crossroads paid $14,000.102

Does vote buying even work?
Donald Trump's $5,000 midterm pledge raises a critical question: Can politicians actually buy votes effectively? Research by Kenneth Greene explains the big flaws in this approach.

I wrote a thing for @msnowreports.bsky.social about whether the Trump superPAC has waited to late to start spending to help the GOP in 2026. Based on what we know about whether earlier or later campaigning matters more, the answer is: probably not.

Just like in his 1st term, Trump is going to hover around 40% approval. As @johnsides.bsky.social et al point out in their 2020 election book, Trump always sides with his base rather than choose policies with broader appeal. When you only aim to satisfy 40% of the population, you get 40% approval.

Americans’ views of the opposite party have declined even further.
New data shows another increase in “affective polarization.”

John Sides @johnsides.bsky.social · 01/07/2025
People also appear to raise the out-party less favorably than "out-partisans" (i.e., Ds rate the "Republican Party" less favorably than "Republicans"). Suggests that "the party" calls to mind party leaders and activists not just ordinary folks, as some research has suggested.
130
John Sides @johnsides.bsky.social · 01/07/2025
Once you separate by mode, you get the expected finding: people express less favorable views of the out-party when they complete the survey themselves. Raises the possibility that the ANES was underestimating affective polarization because it used only face-to-face interviews for many years!
120
John Sides @johnsides.bsky.social · 01/07/2025
Methodological point: you have to separate the later ANES studies by survey mode, because out-party feelings are cooler in the self-completed mode than in face-to-face or phone interviews. If you don't, you're conflating changes over time with changes in mode (and I've seen some people do this).
110
John Sides @johnsides.bsky.social · 01/07/2025
In general, in-party feelings are stable. Perhaps they were higher in the 1960s, although the change the object being evaluated (e.g., from "Democrats" to "Democratic Party") makes it harder to compare. But as we've known, out-party feelings have become cooler. 2024 only continued the trend.
