One of the Great Lakes best preserved wrecks is that of HMS Ontario. The 22 gun frigate sank in a storm on #LakeOntario in October 1780 with the loss of approximately 80 men.

Today, February 15th, is National Flag of Canada Day, the anniversary of when our Maple Leaf flag was first raised. Also, on a single day, when Canada possessed 2 flags? #CanadianFlag #RedEnsign #CdnHist #Vexillology

On Jan. 29, 1894, the first Quebec Winter Carnival was held. The largest winter festival in the Western Hemisphere (and second largest on Earth), many aspects of the festival like the caribou drink, the ice palace and Bonhomme have become iconic. This is its story. 🧵 1/12
A white snowman mascot wearing a red knit cap with a pom-pom and a colorful striped sash tied around the waist. The figure has a smiling face, black eyes, a round nose, and three black buttons down the front. One arm is raised as if waving. Behind the mascot are tall ice structures resembling castle walls and towers made of stacked translucent ice blocks, set against a clear blue sky.

Greenland, and its circular red and white flag, has been much in the news. Well... In 1963, Canadian Art/Weekend Magazine ran a competition for a new Canadian flag. The winner was this abstract modernist design by Rolland Lavoie. The rest is history! #cdnhist #vexillology #Greenland #Canada
Flag of GreenlandPreceding the contentious Great Flag Debate of 1964, various private initiatives sought to replace the Canadian Red Ensign with a localized symbol distinct from British iconography. This minimalist design was the First Prize winner in a widely publicized 1963 contest organized by Weekend Magazine and Canadian Art, proposed by designer Rolland Lavoie. The flag features a plain white field centered with a simple disc divided vertically into two distinct halves of red and blue. These contrasting colors were intended to represent the unity of Canada's French and English linguistic communities within a single national emblem. While it reflects the modernist graphic design trends of the 1960s, the design was never officially adopted by Parliament and remained a private proposal. It should not be confused with the national flag of Japan (which features a solid red sun disc) or the final 1965 Maple Leaf flag.

Went through a small English town many years ago. Its central church has a clock on its tower, but Alcester is different as the clock face is at an angle, to face down the High Street. Additionally, the outline of a Roman fort can be found in the Waitrose supermarket's carpark/parking lot. #England
