Out now! 'Rogues, Rakes and Robbers: A True Crime History of Georgian Britain' by @drangelamuir.bsky.social is published today! Discover real accounts of historic crimes and catch a glimpse of Georgian societies and culture. Find a copy in your favourite local bookshop!
OUT NOW! With a raven sitting upon the !

Book cover which features Georgian illustrations of an overflowing tankard of ale, a man on a speeding horse aiming a gun, a tavern, a raven, and two people in a romantic clinch.Exploring detailed accounts of historic crime is one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of a society and its culture decades and centuries later. Of course, stories of crime and deviance are intriguing in their own right; but through understanding the context in which they were committed, how they were made sense of, and how communities and officials responded to them, we can gain incredible insight into life at that time and place.

Uncover the tales of real-life murders, manslaughters, assaults and arson that took place in Georgian Wales and the borders, which together give us a window onto life for ordinary, common people – whose lives would otherwise be lost from the historical record.

From courtship rituals to the value of horses, Georgian attitudes to sex work and insanity, vulnerable adults and fraud, each chapter uses documents from Wales’s Court of Great Sessions to illuminate the past.

Preach. I'm starting to include the following disclaimer in my syllabi in the (perhaps vain) hope that students will remember that the process of learning is what matters...
Excerpt from a syllabus that reads: For this class to be useful and fruitful to you, you must engage with the readings and documents, even when you are uncertain of what they mean. The process of asking yourselves questions, and indeed of sometimes struggling to understand – which is entirely bypassed by the use of AI – is essential to achieving the course objectives.
