What actually does she mean. I was around for the collapse of British Leyland. I have interpreted it as the start of the collapse of British industry. Is there anything left? The same can never happen again because most, if not all, is already gone.

People really should be done laughing at Donald Trump. Lampooning him only makes him stronger. Why haven't people figured that out yet. The amount of chatter around this man is in inverse proportion to the action needed to remove him.

Here is world data on wildfires. Going further back is not possible because of the lack of satellite data. The world average data actually shows a decrease. Regional data show big fluctuations. The issue is prevention measures and human set fires. No evidence variations are related to CO2 emissions.

John Carr @johncarrabc.bsky.social · 29/07/2026
Yes the fire in Gironde are continuing. The real issue beyond anecdotes is is the rate of wildfire really increasing on average.

100 square kilometres burned next to my house 35 years ago. How big are the fires this week?

John Carr @johncarrabc.bsky.social · 27/07/2026
The “used to be rare” is not everywhere true. I moved to the south of France 35 years ago and wildfires were frequent in Provence. Now in fact they are rare here. The difference is prevention and fire brigade. Concentrating on CO2 to stop wildfires is the wrong way to spend money.

I am sure there is a gain for the EU(27) as a whole. I think the point of Stephen Knowles post was that almost always post about rejoin completely ignore opinions of the EU. The sentiment seems to be if the UK wants to rejoin it will just happen. I do not believe this to be automatically true.

Certainly he does not have much experience of government. But he is free to change some economic policies. It is happening so we must support him. Even though I really liked Starmer and thought he was doing a good job.

The global oil/gas situation has changed since 2024. Surely you want a government which adapts to the real current world.

With Gulf War III likely to continue for a long time, how can you say we do not need more local oil and gas? If consumption stays constant this would just be a shift in the production sites.

Fertility rates across many countries have converged, despite starting from very different levels. (This Data Insight was written by @hannahritchie.bsky.social.) In the thirty years since I was born, fertility rates in my country, the United Kingdom, have not changed much.
Connected dot plot of total fertility rates where the chart compares 1993 and 2023 values for selected countries to illustrate convergence in fertility. Most countries show 2023 rates around 1.6 to 1.7 births per woman, down from 1993 values ranging from 1.8 to 3.8 births per woman. Source: Human Fertility Database (2025). License: CC BY.

OK. I think the EU is going to require a deal based on trust with the UK. If the details are not the same as the standard EU27 conditions it is going to take a long time. I think Starmer knew this and was concentrating on the trust side. I suspect his departure means a reset to zero in trust.

Can you say how much of the year total production of nuclear energy in France is lost because of temperature shutdowns? Is it 0.1% or 0.01% ? Numbers are important for electricity production. For instances how much power is generated by wind+Solar at night when the wind speed is low?
