Six of the tenured faculty that the president is firing are in history. (!) It’s arbitrary. None of the members of the committee that advised Bowie State’s president about “retrenchment” were elected by the faculty senate. That’s against USM policies. Here’s the resolution CUSF passed last May:
COUNCIL of UNIVERSITY
SYSTEM FACULTY
CUSF Resolution on Bowie State University Retrenchment and Shared Governance
Passed by the Council of University System Faculty (CUSF) on May 13, 2026
22 yea, 6 abstentions, 0 nay
Whereas, a year after a vote of no confidence in the Provost at Bowie State University, and a year after the Council of University System Faculty (CUSF) passed a resolution seeking to raise awareness of the concerns at Bowie State University, most are unresolved. An evaluation was commissioned as a result of the concerns that had been raised (the "Commodore Report" in July
2025). But nine months after the Commodore report on shared governance at BSU highlighted "a distressed working relationship exists between the faculty and Provost, with tense and at times hostile communications between parties and distrust and discord from the outset of the Provost's tenure," little has been done to address the problems. According to a survey of full-time faculty concluded on May 7, 2026, 61% of respondents* of BSU faculty reported that the President and Provost have not taken appropriate steps to restore faculty trust and confidence.
Whereas, the Commodore report repeatedly described the adverse effects of neglect of shared governance and provided recommendations intended to serve as a "foundation for strengthening shared governance practices at Bowie State University," these recommendations have not been effectively followed and to date, retrenchment is being initiated by the BSU administration without convening the relevant historical shared governance body, the Faculty Senate Committee on Budget and Retrenchment.
Whereas the Provost has repeatedly violated Appointment, Rank and Tenure policies and procedures and ignored faculty committees making decisions without justification;
Whereas 75% of BSU faculty respondents* reported "fear of retaliation when I consider sharing concerns with the BSU administration:"
Whereas the administrative dysfunction throughout the u…

Together with Jules we'll discuss sportswashing, power, and corruption in the game we love, both internationally and right here in Portland. We'll also attempt to reconcile how we love this beautiful game in spite of these things.

Come to Legends on Sunday, September 20th at 2 p.m. Doors will open at 1:30 PM. This is an all-ages members-only event, and the beer garden will be open. Single-event memberships for the afternoon will be available for $5 at the door. There will be some light bites on hand, but we encourage you to bring snacks to enjoy or share!

Disability grief effing sucks. The feeling of disappearing. being a shell of your former energetic, intellectually engaged self (which = masking, overworking) Some days I don’t know who I am anymore, beyond pain management, always 🤔: “can I do X today, tmrw, next month?” “What am I forgetting?!?”

Whether we want to admit it or not, every NFL game is a snuff film. It's long past time fans of the sport faced up to a reality that becomes clearer every day: American football is simply too dangerous. This year, turn off the NFL. Our latest in @theguardian.com @us.theguardian.com.

A new study offers more evidence that America’s biggest sport produces life-altering head trauma. The NFL will never turn itself off, so it’s on fans to do so

There is more interest than ever in the WNBA, and new fans who don’t know any better are being fed the narrative that a white, straight woman is the savior of a predominantly Black sport. Clark is being touted as the best that’s ever played, despite the fact that she’s not even the best player on her team. And these documentaries only add to the perception that women’s basketball has been built and shaped by white people. It erases the greatness and the labor that Black women have given to making women’s basketball the juggernaut it has become.

This has actually become a complete recalibration of what even matters and is at stake for all our classrooms. No matter what the field, what we teach, somehow we must all be part of the great AI push and prostrate ourselves at the feed of our tech gods, or be treated like children

I just don't understand this push--otoh, they claim "AI is just a tool, and students need this tool" but otoh, administrators and some faculty are insistent that all professors, irrespective of field or interest or method, MUST use this tool because they say so. its so ludicrous.
Deming identified “AI use policies” as a priority for the academic year in the Wednesday message, saying he hoped to roll out College-wide advisory guidelines on AI by the end of the year and proposing “AI acceptance or even encouragement” in writing- and project- heavy classes.

He added that the approach would help affiliates avoid “the AI-detection business because it damages trust between faculty and students.” The message also linked to a Substack article by Colorado State University professor Kyle Saunders arguing that students need AI skills to meet the demands of a modern workforce — an issue Deming has emphasized in previous remarks.

In interviews and written statements, most faculty in writing-intensive fields agreed that they wanted to avoid policing student AI use but remained divided on Deming’s broader proposal for “AI acceptance, or even encouragement.”

Statement on Supreme Court Transgender Ban in High School Sports

Sports have always been a place where young people learn resilience and find community. No child should be told that who they are disqualifies them from that experience. Despite today’s Supreme Court ruling, Minnesota Aurora will continue to support transgender youth and the schools and coaches who want every kid to thrive.
Every young person deserves a fair shot to play, belong, and grow through sports.
