If you are at a conference use. the. microphone. It doesn't matter how loud you think you are, it doesn't matter if you are a speaker or audience member. You should try to accommodate people who are hard of hearing (otherwise you're excluding them!)

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

#MathSky Is there a LaTeX package that sets up 2 pages vertically on 1 letter page in portrait? I want to make a quiz for my students that only uses half the page, and I'd like to print them out two to a page, stacked top/bottom. pgfmorepages only seems to allow a L-R split in landscape.

I suggest that this applies to all academic conferences -- I found myself sitting on a bench at 2:30 a.m. outside the guesthouse I was staying in for the 2026 CiE with two colleagues. Fortunately, it was a fire alarm and not arson. We were all boringly dressed, and it was really for the best.

Dear President Poser,

The New York State Conference of the American Association of University Professors (NYS AAUP), urges you to negotiate in good faith to reach a mutually acceptable agreement with the organized faculty of Hofstra represented by Hofstra AAUP.
Hofstra University has bargained with faculty for over fifty years, maintaining a relationship that has improved the University for faculty and students alike.

Through that period, the University has been held in high esteem as an institution dedicated to providing high-quality education to its students. Collegiality and good faith have been hallmarks of the relationship between administration and the Hofstra AAUP.

Hofstra faculty are a major reason why the University has a great reputation. Yet in recent negotiations, they are being asked to bear a disproportionate part of the burden of a supposed budget crisis at the University. The administration has demanded that faculty increase their healthcare contributions, accept cuts to the employer contribution to their pensions, and take paltry raises that fall significantly below the inflation rate. While faculty are being hit with these unreasonable proposals for cuts, high-level administrators have seen their pay increase by over 23% since 2019. In the end, Hofstra University works because the faculty do. This fact must be recognized at the bargaining table. Likewise, the administration must desist from attacks on the faculty designed to win concessions at the table - such tactics damage faculty morale and consequently the learning environment for students. Faculty working conditions are student learning conditions.

My first semester of college, my dean told us all to take a "what?" course each semester. The kind of course that, when you tell your parents you're taking it, they say "what?!?!?" He was so right. I give my students the same advice now.

#OnThisDay in 1920, Tennessee became the 36th state to ratify the 19th Amendment, securing the number of states needed to add it to the US Constitution. The struggle for voting rights was far from over, as restrictions continued to disenfranchise Black women & other women of color for decades.

Hi #MathSky! I've got a question about self-similarity-related things. A contraction is a function f s.t. |f(x)-f(y)| <= c|x-y|. Can anyone give me a fun example where the < matters? In all the situations I'm used to, we actually have equality (Sierpinski triangle, etc.).
