FB reminded me today that 9 years ago I found a bunch of files on my computer that included poetry I wrote in 1999. Please enjoy the only sonnet I've ever written, the most emo dramatic thing you'll read today:
A Sonnet
Give me your grace in exchange for my tears
Your hot, roaring flame for all my years
In darkness alone rest all my fears
Be yet as now the flame that sears
Blind may I be, but no tears in my eye
Time cannot tell, the truth cannot lie
Life may be fleeting, a lost child's cry
Death when it comes, it cannot hide
And here now you stand, here at my side
My pain and my woe you cannot deride
No longer with hope can you ever abide
The dark hunter sweeps in on his final ride

Do not weep for the last good-bye:
One day all living must die.

It's matriculation day @durham.ac.uk, when I run my annual College Queueing Competition as I marshall colleges through the Galilee Chapel. This year, however, I marshalled just one day, not both, so I only have four colleges to consider. Rather than ranking them, I've given individual awards.

This is quite cool. My university is the first organisation in the world to force Microsoft to allow us to turn off copilot summaries in Word 365, after a backlash against it from staff (including, very vocally, me). That cannot have been easy for our heroic IT people so hats very much off to them!

Studying history is like learning why some choices are baked in and knowing which you can change. My dad was a systems engineer, who did a job at a fire station. The fire station was still recording blocks traveled--and my dad found out it was to keep track of the tiredness of the horses!

I bet this dude also wouldn't bring his baby to a job interview. I did -- albeit I was on the interviewer side of the table, not the interviewee side. It was a video-interview (long before the days of zoom), and she slept on my lap the whole time. Candidate on the other end never even knew.

If there's one thing that I have fought for, very hard over the last couple of years, it's keeping my intro logic class from being team-lectured. I have put so much effort into crafting a narrative for this class. It just doesn't work to drop someone in for a few weeks to tell the same story.

The free wifi on this flight is quite great, except that it wouldn't allow me to listen to BTS's "Normal" when we came to it in my playlist, and since it DID let me listen to "Like Animals," the next on in the playlist, the only explanation I can think of is censoring the swearing! 😂
