Tn7 family transposons that include all of the guide RNA-directed transposons (CAST) are common in bacteria. We now find diverse representatives across archaea, with many in the Asgard group. Reviving an Asgard element confirmed the exciting behaviors of the family #MicroSky #TESky

Very excited about our work from @jordanthesier.bsky.social and @popomicro.bsky.social et al. We find that Tn7 family elements common in bacteria (that include all of the guide RNA-directed transposons, CAST) are also found across archaea including many in the exciting Asgard group! #MicroSky #TESky

Trying to define a “natural” condition can get you some heat in my experience. Nevertheless, a reasonable hypothesis that is out there is that locally beneficial genes tend to be on plasmids and other mobile elements. For example, antibiotic resistance in a hospital.

This doesn't sound like what you are working with, but I have seen many labs rediscover Restriction and Modification Systems when they first try to set up conjugation systems because of incompatibilities with donor/host.

We are very interested in genome dynamics in Cyanobacteria. Tn7-like elements are especially prevalent in the group (40%) and they are home to most of the guide RNA-directed transposons (CAST). We found the first example of telomeric transposons in Cyanobacteria. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...
