Something remarkable is happening: James Talarico is running an expansively pro-immigrant campaign in Texas, a state Trump won by 14 points, speaking in Biblical terms about our duty to "the stranger." And it's resonating. That's seismic. 1/ (new piece) newrepublic.com/article/2160...

In Texas, Something Seismic Is Happening—and It’s All Trump’s Fault
Thanks to the economy and ICE, Trump has lost Texas Latinos. And James Talarico is developing a humane pro-immigrant message that’s resonating—even in this ultra-Trumpy state.

British director Michael Powell with legendary glamour/nude model Pamela Green, setting up for a scene in "Peeping Tom" (1960), in which Pamela Green plays one of the victims of Karl-Heinz Boehm. Angie Dickinson in a behind-the-scenes photo from the scene in "Dressed To Kill" (1980) when she visits her therapist, Dr. Elliott (Michael Caine). She wears her iconic white dress with strappy white high heels. sitting with her shapely legs (one of the best pairs of female legs in the business back in the day) neatly crossed. Note that the chair she sits in is WAY too big for her, and has to be propped up by wooden blocks under each leg!

This. That Man's two most important promises were "no new wars" and "I'll bring inflation down and make things more affordable". Rhetorical question time: did he keep either one? No, no, he did not. Those are the two central things Democrats need to hammer on with less than 5 weeks to go.

Watching TV in Texas it’s becoming more and more clear that THE ONLY THING Paxton has is transphobia. I can’t say if it will be enough. People here are hurting, but white people especially have a history of hating. It’s gonna come down to depressed GOP turnout/distaste for Paxton personally.

Honestly, it'd be more of a surprise if they *didn't* hold such sentiments. Serbia has regarded Russia as its patron & defender ever since it won its independence from the Ottomans. One reason King Alexander was overthrown & assassinated in 1903 was because he was considered too pro-Austrian.

My greatest frustrating has been with policy wonks who persist in thinking we can just keep doing normal policy analysis ("calling balls and strikes") in this situation. The President of the United States is both lawless and out of his mind. That preempts all normal discussion.

Seems like some version of this runs every day
Like many of her neighbors, Ms. Vuittonet had been worried about the streams of new immigrants coming across the Rio Grande during the Biden administration and had trusted that Mr. Trump would stop them. Although some Trump supporters held signs calling for "mass deportations now" during the 2024 campaign, Ms. Vuittonet never thought such deportations would include people she knew who had lived in the United States for decades.
"I knew that he was going to start deporting people, but that he was going to go after bad criminals, like true hardcore criminals, rapists, killers," Ms. Vuittonet said, sitting in the small coffee shop she runs from the back of an antique store.
She thought of her six children, who range from ages 6 to 12. "Of course I want the streets safe."
But when her brother was taken to an immigration detention center earlier this year, just days after a scheduled check-in with an immigration official, she said it felt like a punch to the gut.

Quite a few classic-film birthdays today; among them, Anita Ekberg (1931), Greer Garson (1904) and Lizabeth Scott (1922). #botd #classicfilm #vintagefilm #vintageactress
Swedish-born movie actress Anita Ekberg, born this day in 1931, in a scene from the 1957 version of "War and Peace". She is shown in a scene where she attends the theater, wearing a gold gown with deep decolletage edged with flowers all around the edge with more flowers in her hair, accessorized by a necklace with large jewels and pearls and white shoulder-length gloves. She props her head on her white-gloved right hand, with an attentive expression on her face.British-born movie actress Greer Garson, born this day in 1904, pictured in a promotional portrait with Errol Flynn for their 1949 movie "That Forsyte Woman" (based on the book "The Forsyte Saga"). The pair is dressed in Victorian-era evening clothing (though Garson's gown is designed more to highlight her beauty and glamour than for accuracy); Flynn is dressed in black evening suit with white tie, and Garson wears an off-the-shoulder black evening gown with black chiffon drapes and long black lace evening gloves.Movie actress Lizabeth Scott, born this day in 1922 and famed for her roles in noir films, poses for a glamour promotional portrait. She wears her blonde hair in soft waves to her shoulders, and a slinky evening gown with "V" decolletage cut down to the bottom of her cleavage, accessorized with metallic detailing on the midriff. She wears black shoulder-length gloves.

it’s come to my attention that my tumblr post has been crossposted to bluesky, so I’m posting it on my account here #AntiAI #GenAI
recently my friend's comics professor told her that it's acceptable to use gen AI for script-writing but not for art, since a machine can't generate meaningful artistic work. meanwhile, my sister's screenwriting professor said that they can use gen AI for concept art and visualization, but that it won't be able to generate a script that's any good. and at my job, it seems like each department says that AI can be useful in every field except the one that they know best.

It's only ever the jobs we're unfamiliar with that we assume can be replaced with automation. The more attuned we are with certain processes, crafts, and occupations, the more we realize that gen AI will never be able to provide a suitable replacement. The case for its existence relies on our ignorance of the work and skill required to do everything we don't.

A comic of two foxes, one of whom is blue, the other is green. In this one, Blue and Green are sitting at a table, in front of a game board set up with several character figurines and various pieces of landscape terrain. On the table is also a measuring tape and a scattering of dice.
Green: Okay, that makes six. How many points did we need to dodge that strike?
Blue: Eight.
Green: Oof.

Both of the foxes look at the board pensively.
Blue: I guess that concludes the campaign. Another party wiped out in their first combat encounter.
Green: At this point we're just feeding adventurers to highwaymen.
