Right yeah that's exactly what I'm doing - a big print banner design!

I live in Leicester. It's just over an hour on the train to London. Yay! Except if I want to go to London for an event that starts at 9:30am and return in time to see my kids before bed it's… £209. For a 1 hour 8 min train return ticket. UK train companies are taking the piss.

Yeah that was the impression I got too, I guess I just wondered whether for the system Home Screen they were "cheating" in ways that they don't allow third party developers too…

In the simulator at least I often see a black screen while it refreshes the view onto different screens / poses. I wonder whether that ever/often happens on real hardware. The way they presented it, it looked magical seeing both screens react so quickly and work in tandem.

Very curious to try it on an actual hardware device but at least in the simulator Hour by Hour is feeling pretty cool on iPhone Duo!

Today is the ten year anniversary of the completion of the Sorcery! series! What began as a pitch for a "Discworld companion app" to a publisher grew - thanks to Steve Jackson's trust! - into a massive, sprawling, open-world interactive fiction adventure. If you came for the ride - thank you!

Then you'll feel even *less* like you bought a new device at all!

It's probably because it's simply not possible to broadly generalise such a system? For example, the iOS app switcher interface is very complex. But it would be cool if it could support like 90% of use cases out of the box.

One thing that surprises me about SwiftUI is that the animation and transition system wasn't designed from the ground up to support 1:1 gestures: for example an animation that slides a widget from X=50 to X=100 could provide a built-in way to drag is gradually from one side to the other.

Because I'm a nerd, chopping always reminds me of GPU programming. Embarrassingly parallel baby.

We optimized draw calls by 99% (lol) in Hidden Folks 2 by writing some tools to find all textures used in a level, generate a level-specific atlas, and replace individual texture references with atlas textures. Thread below 🧵👇🏼 #godotengine
Two side-by-side screenshots showing before and after we applied a texture atlas optimization to our game Hidden Folks two, the before showing 13318 draw calls and the after showing 113 draw calls

Exactly! Was expecting a modifier and tried various things but didn't figure it out. I also poked around in settings because I thought maybe that kind of thing could be globally toggled but didn't see an option… Glad I'm not the only one 🙂

The graphic type felt right because it caused the contents to all resize correctly which is cool. I guess I could use symbols but I like the flexibility of graphics. Overall the defaults feel like they're very slowly drifting away from how I like to work instinctively.

For a recent project where I was building a little map I was copy pasting little graphic instances and 1) copy/paste ended up with them nesting inside each other (fix is to use CMD-D) and then also 2) dragging them around near each other caused them to overlap and nest inside each other continually

Ah cool! TBH this was slightly drive-by criticism, there might be solutions for my issues, but you're right I should ask around. I think my problems revolve around the new nestable frame types (group/frame/graphic) and the layout settings….

Yep 100%… plagiarism has been common in games for a while but yeah i can see it getting even worse. Thankfully indies have a small but dedicated audience who are true connoisseurs 😁 I can't see that changing any time soon. (Tech details in your piece all look sound btw!)

I'm slightly wrestling with the fact that nowadays it's *even* harder to make a breakout non-game app for iOS or Mac. Maybe game dev is the devil I know, but I can believe that good and creative game dev will be harder to topple with vibe coding. Slop games have already existed for decades!

It's a fun and interesting read, seeing someone with a wealth of experienced outside of games get started with Godot! Feels like a backwards version of me playing with app dev in Swift 😃 Also, this jumped out at me and rung very true:
I believe that connecting with users/customers/players on a more authentic and emotional level is going to become increasingly important. This is not an easy to thing to do in general. Games are this unique mix of technical, art, play, and storytelling. I think that combination is compelling on its own, but it also has some inherent advantages when it comes to emotional connection.

I'd already prepped this in anticipation of the iPhone Duo announcement, guess the work won't go to waste 😃 interested to see how easy it'll be to adopt the new vertical toolbar

Joseph Humfrey @joe.inkle.co · 10/09/2026
Not massively I don't think. In anticipation of the announcement I'd already designed the app to be resizable and support a 2 column layout 😁

It's very easy to get into a network-specific threads and posts and then limit yourself to that single network. IMHO it's not the end of the world, but something to be aware of.

Joseph Humfrey @joe.inkle.co · 09/09/2026
hmmmmmmmmm. I have mixed news on this I'm afraid. - I initially got 2x notifications, one for each network - when I went into the thread, indigo seemed initially unaware that it was a cross thread - but when I found the thread on my unified timeline, I was able to cross reply

Yeah. It also looks like the EV5 is physically much bigger than an Ioniq 5? Ioniq 5 is "just a slightly chunky car" rather than something like an SUV
110
Joseph Humfrey @joe.inkle.co · 08/09/2026
(SUV I mean, I have "truck" in my head because of R1 lineage and being very much not a truck or SUV guy!)
111
Joseph Humfrey @joe.inkle.co · 08/09/2026
Oh! I misread your original post. Ioniq 5 and EV6 are equivalent internals, both crossover sized. EV5 I don't know but looks more like a truck like R2? If that's your expectation, then yeah Ioniq 5 and EV6 are a different size class to that - yeah, "roomy car" (my perspective is British btw!)
100
Joseph Humfrey @joe.inkle.co · 08/09/2026
I understand it's the sister car to the EV6 with extremely similar internals, but I think the EV6 has had fewer ICCU issues? But if you love the I5, you should go with your gut. It's a lovely, deceptively spacious car, and dreamy to drive.

Joseph Humfrey @joe.inkle.co · 08/09/2026
I've had an Ioniq 5 for 3 years and love it! I'll admit I fell in love with it for its looks and then was delighted that it turned out to be a great car too, ticking every box for me. However it's difficult to recommend 100% unequivocally without pointing out the ICCU issues 😞

I used to absolutely love Sketch for vector drawing and UI, but recently I've become frustrated with it as it's piled on features and redesigned the interface. I used to be proud that I was using the native indie Mac app, but starting to wonder whether to consider the enemy… Figma 😕

to really understand the absurdity of metacritic, imagine rating all foods in a similar way. or what about a metacritic for clothes? sports and exercise? language? who do we as game devs tolerate that place.

Super excited to have been the very first sponsor of Designed in California from @myke.social and @snell.zone! And just heard my very first podcast ad read 😍 The history of Apple is very much my cup of tea, and you couldn't hope for a better podcasting pair to tell it. Highly recommended!

Designed in California - Relay
Expertly-told stories about the 50-year history of Apple and the world it created, from Jason Snell and Myke Hurley. We cover the entire range of the last half-century, from Apple's earliest days in a garage, to the rise of the Mac, to the return of Steve Jobs and the creation of some of Apple's most iconic products. Apple's history is also our shared tech history, and these are all stories worth telling.
