That's not how serious historical scholarship works, at least to my mind. There might be re-evaluations and disagreements about certain interpretations, but in the end it's a collaborative effort, building on each other's work, towards a fuller understanding of the past.

This is a claim from the interview: "the more I looked into it, the more I realised that most of the theories we have to explain the rise of the Nazis don’t make sense". So decades of scholarship just had it wrong?

Obviously, I haven't read the book but the rise of the Nazis really is the most researched topic in German-or even modern-history. Claiming (even if it is only for clicks in an interview) that one book has it all figured out where all historians before got it wrong is laughable.

That's nice to know, I hope it's properly referenced... the way I understand performativity (and the work that uses that concept to describe the use of violence by the Nazis), "violence-rhetoric" is part of performative violence.

Jochen Hung @jochenhung.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
He indeed mentions Nazis newspapers as his sources. And, in the interview at least, he mentions the role of performative violence as his big new explanation – without mentioning the work of people like Benjamin, Schumann or Jones. Doesn't really give me much confidence that I would enjoy this book.

If my PhD student would try to sell other people's insights as their own ground-breaking research (based on looking at issues of Der Stürmer), I would send them to an introductory course on research ethics. It's just bad scholarship.

Jochen Hung @jochenhung.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Like I said, nothing stated in the interview is wrong. It's just that other people have said it before. The significance of the 1930 election and performative violence are standard arguments in the debate about the rise of the Nazis, developed by a long line of scholars.

It's not that what the guy says is completely wrong. It's just that a lot of people have said it before (and then a lot of people disagreed with them, etc.). It's the history equivalent of "I've done my own research"...

"About three years ago I became interested in how Hitler’s National Socialist German Workers’ party (NSDAP) rose to prominence when Germany was still a democracy." About three years ago I became interested in quantum theory. During that time I wrote a book explaining how Bohr got it all wrong.

I think about this interview with the distinguished philosopher Conan O'Brien a lot. I actually think this is a healthy way to live your life! www.nytimes.com/2019/01/14/a...
Is this how you want to go out, with a show that gets smaller and smaller until it’s gone?

Maybe that’s O.K. I think you have more of a problem with that than I do. [Laughs.] At this point in my career, I could go out with a grand, 21-gun salute, and climb into a rocket and the entire Supreme Court walks out and they jointly press a button, I’m shot up into the air and there’s an explosion and it’s orange and it spells, “Good night and God love.” In this culture? Two years later, it’s going to be, who’s Conan? This is going to sound grim, but eventually, all our graves go unattended.

You’re right, that does sound grim.

Sorry. Calvin Coolidge was a pretty popular president. I’ve been to his grave in Vermont. It has the presidential seal on it. Nobody was there. And by the way, I’m the only late-night host that has been to Calvin Coolidge’s grave. I think that’s what separates me from the other hosts.

I had a great conversation with Albert Brooks once. When I met him for the first time, I was kind of stammering. I said, you make movies, they live on forever. I just do these late-night shows, they get lost, they’re never seen again and who cares? And he looked at me and he said, [Albert Brooks voice] “What are you talking about? None of it matters.” None of it matters? “No, that’s the secret. In 1940, people said Clark Gable is the face of the 20th Century. Who [expletive] thinks about Clark Gable? It doesn’t matter. You’ll be forgotten. I’ll be forgotten. We’ll all be forgotten.” It’s so funny because you’d think that would depress me. I was walking on air after that.

Oh look, I'm getting #AIslop ads against the #documentary #Naza now, in #theNetherlands. Can you imagine doing this? Doing an AIslop campaign against a documentary on a random weather app? They really know they lost the #PublicOpinion on their operations in #Gaza. This is pretty desperate shit.
a screenshot of a weather app with an ad - drawn, cartoon-like characters (made to look like the creators of the film), and above them it says "avoid context". same two cartoon characters, and next to them it says "hard evidence / you might not find any".
