El Niño strengthening into unseen territory. The Niño3.4 region just reached a +3.0 °C anomaly (relative to the 1991–2020). Such a warmth has never been observed in September, and it's only a few hundredths of a degree away from the 2015 all-time record.
Nino3.4 temperature anomaly in different years. The values in 2026 are above the previous years' temperatures and close to 2015 all-time record.

2003 was once exceptional. Now it's average. 2024's record will be average by the mid-2040s. The extreme summers of the 2040s don't bear thinking about! 🌡🥵😬 #ClimateEmergency After @edhawkins.org & @stottpeter.bsky.social using ERA5 + CMIP6.
European summer temperature, June to August, over 10°W-40°E, 30-50°N, the region Stott et al. used for the 2003 heatwave, relative to 1961-1990. The black line shows ERA5 observations from 1950 to 2025, rising from about zero in the mid-twentieth century to 2.75°C in 2024. Grey shading is the 5-95% range of 34 CMIP6 models over the historical period, blue shading the same models under SSP2-4.5 to 2100, with the running median in white. Two dotted lines mark the 2003 summer at 2.06°C and the 2024 summer at 2.75°C, each dropping to the year the model median reaches that level: 2027 and 2045. Model region approximated by the IPCC AR6 Mediterranean and West & Central Europe regions, weighted 0.75 to 0.25.

We’re more like primitive fishes than once believed
People traditionally think that lungs and limbs are key innovations that came with the vertebrate transition from water to land. But in fact, the genetic basis of air-breathing and limb movement was already established in our fish ancestor 50 million years earlier. This, according to a recent genome mapping of primitive fish conducted by the University of Copenhagen, among others. The new study changes our understanding of a key milestone in our own evolutionary history.

Why does this happen? Two candidate mechanisms: 1) AI resets your reference point for how long things "should" take. Unaided work suddenly feels harder than it actually is, -- a kind of hedonic adaptation. 2) AI removes the productive struggle through which you learn what you're capable of.
