The government moving or hiding jailed people to avoid review by courts isn't some loophole in our habeas corpus rights. This government behavior has been considered a violation of the people's habeas corpus rights since at least the Habeas Corpus Act of 1679. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Habeas_...
Jailors were forbidden to move prisoners from one prison to another or out of the country to evade the writ. In case of disobedience jailers would be punished with severe fines which had to be paid to the prisoner.[5][6]

"One of the big things would be to take the able-bodied males and put them into the police and military, which are actively recruiting, which were so decimated by the TPS taking place in the first place," he said. This is an INSANE statement to make!

There's no forgiving this. No living it down. It's a stain on our humanity. When all this is over, the monsters who did this should be pariahs. And the soulless thugs who cheered it on while dehumanizing Haitian immigrants should be reminded of what they did every day of their lives.

I used to carry something like around w/me & when someone wanted to argue about immigration ("do it the right way & wait in line"), I'd unfold it & ask them to map out on the paper which line they would qualify for if they were an immigrant. Not sure it ever worked but I wanted to make the point....

I’ve made a deliberate attempt to stop responding to these pieces of deportation propaganda, in part because their entire point is trolling and they WANT the angry responses. But the same time, we cannot make this stuff normal. It’s deeply wrong; a perversion of good things for fascist purposes.

The new H-1B tax will be announced tomorrow. The original $100K tax was ruled illegal in court. The White House has cooked up its successor: a $103K tax on *all* private sector H-1Bs. Much more drastic than the original: NO EXCEPTION for people already in the US (like grads of US universities)—>

One of many critical 2028 platform planks has to be the shuttering of ICE, and candidates should be explicit in their messaging that the electorate should send them a Congress that will help make this possible, and that if it doesn’t, they will work to abolish ICE through executive avenues

Tbf airlines are shockingly well versed in immigration law in several (most?!) countries due to the fact that they're massively fined if they transport someone to a place where they don't have a visa or the proper paperwork. They really don't play around with even the mere possibility.

Good @gelliottmorris.com piece showing Trump's deportations are unpopular in *all* the swing states. Key point: Republicans know Trump is deeply vulnerable on the issue, even if pundits refuse to see it. He discusses my piece on Susan Collins/Dems at length: www.gelliottmorris.com/p/even-repub...

A depressing reality as a journalist is that often the most valuable stories are the ones the social media algorithm/people care the least about. One of my worst performing videos for Mother Jones is about a family of asylum seekers who had a father deported by ICE. It is likely my best work.

I don't think most Americans would enjoy the compliance and government checks required to keep up with the concepts of residency and domicile since most have no idea what it would entail (notification to the municipality, residency checks conducted by said municipality, etc).

J Lu @jlu412.bsky.social · 30/06/2026
In parts (most?) of Europe, these concepts have concrete, specific legal meanings that simply don't exist as such in the US. It's incredibly invasive (from the American point of view) & requires A LOT of additional bureaucracy to verify and keep these records.

Notably, FOUR justices would have rewritten the Constitution by fiat. Kavanaugh only concurred because he thinks the law Congress passed in the 1950s granting birthright citizenship governs the case, but he thinks Congress could eliminate birthright citizenship along Trump's lines if they wanted.
SUPREME COURT OF THE UNITED STATES No. 25–365 DONALD J. TRUMP, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, ET AL., PETITIONERS v. BARBARA, ET AL. ON WRIT OF CERTIORARI BEFORE JUDGMENT TO THE UNITED STATES COURT OF APPEALS FOR THE FIRST CIRCUIT [June 30, 2026] JUSTICE KAVANAUGH, concurring in the judgment and dissenting in part. Executive Order No. 14160 establishes new exceptions to birthright citizenship for children born to foreign citizens unlawfully or temporarily in the country. 90 Fed. Reg. 8449 (2025). The Court today holds that the Order violates the Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution. I respectfully disagree with the Court’s constitutional holding. In my view, the Executive Order does not violate the Fourteenth Amendment. But the Order does contravene a federal statute, 8 U. S. C. §1401(a). Congress could—consistent with the Fourteenth Amendment—amend §1401(a) or otherwise enact new legislation establishing exceptions to birthright citizenship for children born to foreign citizens unlawfully or temporarily in the country. But Congress has not yet done so.

BREAKING: The Supreme Court in a 6-3 vote UPHOLDS birthright citizenship, affirming the default rule that all persons born in the United States (with narrow exceptions) are U.S. citizens at birth. A total LOSS for President Trump and the effort to rewrite the 14th Amendment.
Held: Children born in the United States to parents unlawfully or temporarily present are “subject to the jurisdiction” of the United States
and are citizens at birth under the Fourteenth Amendment’s Citizenship Clause.

At the human level, the World Cup is beautiful snackstack.net/2026/06/29/t...
Have you seen the photos and videos of Lawrence, Kansas welcoming the Algerian World Cup team and its fans? I should have known that a Midwest college town could step up like that but, well, I didn't. There's the old Kansas guy who made an Algerian flag the size of a field. The University of Kansas marching band showing up at training sessions to play the Algerian national anthem. The partying when Algeria beat Jordan in their second game. The mayor trying harissa. The chamber of commerce (!). posting wild scenes from a watch party in a blocked-off street. The random Kansans yelling "inshallah Algeria wins tonight” or wearing Riyad Mahrez jerseys and tearing up while they talk about their pride in hosting this team.“We’re so happy they came here to be part of this community,” the mustachioed man in that last video says. I want to print that up and put it in every classroom and public space as an aspirational, neighborly ethos to replace the Pledge of Allegiance.

A huge obstacle to AC in Italy isn't the lack of "want" or trying to tough it out, but the cost for energy is almost twice what American energy costs with salaries that are very significantly lower. It would take almost an entire paycheck to pay an AC bill, not to mention the cost of installation.

IMPORTANT to know that the vast majority of Haitians with TPS entered the country legally at ports of entry, not illegally. The majority have NEVER violated the law. The admin stripped their status by breaking the law, but today SCOTUS says courts can't do anything about that.
Chart shows Haitian migrant encounters by entry method, January 2021 to January 2025, showing that after mid-2022, nearly every entry was legal.

After ICE deported Wendy Hernandez Reyes, it turned her 3-year-old son Orlin over to her sister’s estranged partner, who tortured Orlin and beat him to death. I can’t say what I think should happen to those responsible without violating this website’s TOS. www.washingtonpost.com/immigration/...
Because the service had been arranged last minute, the funeral home on a busy street in Atlanta could only offer them one hour.
Orlin wore a long-sleeved shirt and a tan vest with a striped bow tie and matching pants.
The clothes concealed his injuries. A new teddy bear was tucked beside him.
Embroidered into the satin lining of his casket was "Principito," or "Little Prince."
His full name was embossed on the coffin:
Orlin Josue Hernandez Reyes.
McCaffrey and Hernandez's sister had to hold Hernandez up as she walked trembling toward her son. Once she regained the strength to stand, she stood over him and stroked his face and chest.
"I never wanted to leave you," she whispered repeatedly. "I wanted to bring you with me.
My son."
