Early Modern Recipes: Cooking in the Archives
A Renaissance literature professor cooks handwritten recipes from 1600 to 1800 because there are questions a manuscript will not answer until you have done what it says with your hands. She also refuses to call the results authentic, which is what makes them worth reading.

This is flatly incorrect & ahistorical. The American founders clearly intended the much-vaunted 'checks and balances' of the constitution to not only deal with but prevent this very sort of despotism. That the system has so abjectly failed is not proof it wasn't *explicitly intended* to prevent it.

A still pond reflects yellowing leaves on birch and maple as well as a pale blue sky. The early morning light is stark against most of the trees, with some tall, grassy stalks standing in the near foreground.

I'm back at writing today after a few weeks hijacked by catastrophes in course prep and it feels so good to get my brain wrapped around the sources and stories for Hannah Wolley's life and work.
Two pages from the beginning of Hannah Wolley's "A Supplement to the Queen-Like Closet" of 1674, on the left-hand side, the final page of the Table of Contents listing sample letters and other miscellaneous matters. On the facing page, below a decorative divider appears the following text:

If any person desire to speak with me, they may find me at Mr. Richard Wolley’s house in the Old-Bailey in Golden Cup Court; He is Master of Arts and Reader at St. Martin’s Ludgate. They may have of me several remedies for several distempers, at reasonable rates. Likewise, if any gentlewoman or other maids who desire to go forth to service and do want accomplishment for the same. For a reasonable gratuity, I shall inform them.

This MIT report on AI and teaching is rightfully getting lots of praise: aiandeducation.mit.edu/report/. There's a ton to like, but it exemplifies a trend I see on Bluesky around AI + pedagogy conversations: they tend to leave out online learning entirely.
Screenshot of MIT report on AI and education:
3.1.4. Build structured in-person social learning
into subjects
Because Al tools are disrupting longstanding patterns of social learning at MIT, every subject should include a regular in-person social component (not just sitting in lecture or recitation and quietly taking notes). Instructors should intentionally structure such interactions to achieve desired learning objectives and maintain quality, even in large classes.

Updating the test bank for the early modern world history survey & my multiple choice question about 18thc inoculation seems much less benign & straightfoward.
A pair of images from the animated show, "The Simpsons", depicts a crouching, depressed Bart saying, "This is the worst day of my life." In the second still, his smiling father, Homer, kneels in front of Bart, with one hand on his son's shoulder while he chides with the raised finger of his other hand, correcting, "The worst day of your life. . . so far."
