Tonight's Early Industrial Europe session is an excuse to geek out about the Great Northern War (or Sweden, Denmark Saxony, Poland, Hanover, Brandenburg-Prussia, & Russia in the early 18thc) and many cool tidbits from the agricultural revolution.

One thing I find endlessly funny about the rise of AI is that it has revealed that there is a large number of people who believe that the reason they wrote essays at school or university is their teachers were desperately waiting for them to provide a definite answer to “Lear: what’s up with him?”

Oh, it's been a long time since my teaching got into transubstantiation versus consubstantiation and the fervour over infant baptism, but I got students into all of that today. I have missed the early modern survey!

There are strict limits on optional modules (electives) in many UK-stylr professional degrees (s.a. medicine and engineering). In some cases, nothing outside of the department is permitted! I'm glad that Canada leans away from this.

This is flatly incorrect & ahistorical. The American founders clearly intended the much-vaunted 'checks and balances' of the constitution to not only deal with but prevent this very sort of despotism. That the system has so abjectly failed is not proof it wasn't *explicitly intended* to prevent it.

A still pond reflects yellowing leaves on birch and maple as well as a pale blue sky. The early morning light is stark against most of the trees, with some tall, grassy stalks standing in the near foreground.

I'm back at writing today after a few weeks hijacked by catastrophes in course prep and it feels so good to get my brain wrapped around the sources and stories for Hannah Wolley's life and work.
Two pages from the beginning of Hannah Wolley's "A Supplement to the Queen-Like Closet" of 1674, on the left-hand side, the final page of the Table of Contents listing sample letters and other miscellaneous matters. On the facing page, below a decorative divider appears the following text:

If any person desire to speak with me, they may find me at Mr. Richard Wolley’s house in the Old-Bailey in Golden Cup Court; He is Master of Arts and Reader at St. Martin’s Ludgate. They may have of me several remedies for several distempers, at reasonable rates. Likewise, if any gentlewoman or other maids who desire to go forth to service and do want accomplishment for the same. For a reasonable gratuity, I shall inform them.
