The touchstone of most authoritarian regimes is not the kind of total control that most people feel in their day-to-day lives. It is that the regime is only selectively bound by law, producing constant low-grade anxiety as to whether, how, or against whom power will be exercised.

Text: Musk Junta Seizes Key Governmental Offices
February 1, 2025
By William Boot

WASHINGTON, D.C. — What started Thursday as a political purge of the internal security services accelerated Friday into a full-blown coup, as elite technical units aligned with media oligarch Elon Musk moved to seize key systems at the national treasury, block outside access to federal personnel records, and take offline governmental communication networks.

With rapidity that has stunned even longtime political observers, forces loyal to Musk’s junta have established him as the all-but undisputed unelected head of government in just a matter of days, unwinding the longtime democracy’s constitutional system and its proud nearly 250-year-old tradition of the rule of law. Having secured themselves in key ministries and in a building adjacent to the presidential office complex, Musk’s forces have begun issuing directives to civil service workers and forcing the resignation of officials deemed insufficiently loyal, like the head of the country’s aviation authority.

When oligarchy meets technology. (And media, money and corruption...) Well worth reading, by @williamcb.bsky.social: open.substack.com/pub/williamc...
To sum up, oligarchy based on the combination of technology, media, money and corruption of the rule of law is the reality now of our most important ally, the guarantor of Europe’s security for 80 years. We are dealing not just with oligarchy and not just with the tech-industrial complex but a combination of the two. How is this turn liable to impact the UK?

1/4 The term social web is probably too big a compromise. The "web" part is the only part that's imho useful. The sad part is that "social" means "we removed most of the features of the web." Why? Some vague sense that people would write too much if given the space. Or link too

I’m not sure people quite grasp how much of the crypto world is reacting to the Trump memecoin launches.
Trump dropping his own memecoin means he has the wrong people in his ear re crypto policy.

I’m now getting very concerned about the Trump presidency.

Something that hasn’t been much discussed - creating a bunch of personal memecoins opens the door to secretive foreign buyers trying to curry influence with our leaders. If you hated hunter biden’s anonymous art sales, you should hate this too.

@nic__carter
Basically, we used to have an informal rule that presidents wouldn’t start or run businesses that could pose a conflict of interest. Creating a bunch of memecoins and defi protocols opens the possibility to rampant violations of the emoluments clause. Not to mention the obvious COI given the fact that trump can set crypto policy.

The most important plot for understanding UK politics & economics now - the collapse in productivity growth since the mid-2000s. Nothing that governments of last 15 years have done has made a material difference, & if we continue doing the same things we'll get the same result.
Plot of productivity growth since 1970, showing a pre-2005 trend of 2.1% pa growth, and post-2005 trend of 0.5% growth. ONS data.
