In her Long Now Talk, @katecrawford.bsky.social argues that AI has created a metabolic rift: massive data collection that acts like poor nutrition at planetary scale. However, this is something we’ve seen before, dating back to the 1500s. Watch the full talk here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=lsBn...

New @sashamtl.bsky.social @strubell.bsky.social @katecrawford.bsky.social paper is a v v good read -->>> "many of the purported “solutions” to climate challenges via AI remain tethered to profit-driven imperatives rather than broader systemic transformations" arxiv.org/pdf/2501.16548
This reality highlights a structural barrier: If AI solutions to climate change do not yield near-term financial returns,
they may struggle to gain traction in an industry propelled by venture capital, quarterly earnings, and shareholder
expectations. Consequently, many of the touted climate positive AI applications, like energy grid optimization or automated water management, risk being overshadowed by more lucrative pursuits that do not necessarily mitigate
environmental harm. The underlying problem, then, is not just one of measuring or quantifying impacts more thoroughly within existing market logics — this simply perpetuates Jevons’ paradox. Instead, what is required is a more
substantial reimagining of the relationship between AI technologies, business objectives, and ecological imperatives
[98]. Genuinely climate-aligned AI strategies might require public policy frameworks that penalize unsustainable practices and reward genuinely carbon-negative deployments of AI, and business models that do not hinge on perpetual
growth, in order to ensure that increased AI efficiency does not simply spur more consumption

"92 million low-income people in the U.S. states—everyone whose income is less than 200 percent of the federal poverty line—have some basic aspect of their lives decided by AI" www.techtonicjustice.org/reports/ines... this is a damning report
reads: The Ways AI Decides How Low-Income People Work, Live, Learn, and Survive

The use of artificial intelligence, or AI, by governments, landlords, employers, and other powerful private interests restricts the opportunities of low-income people in every basic aspect of life: at home, at work, in school, at government offices, and within families. AI technologies derive from a lineage of automation and algorithms that have been in use for decades with established patterns of harm to low-income communities. As such, now is a critical moment to take stock and correct course before AI of any level of technical sophistication becomes entrenched as a legitimate way to make key decisions about the people society marginalizes.

Employing a broad definition of AI, this report represents the first known effort to comprehensively explain and quantify the reach of AI-based decision-making among low-income people in the United States. It establishes that essentially all 92 million low-income people in the U.S. states—everyone whose income is less than 200 percent of the federal poverty line—have some basic aspect of their lives decided by AI.
