I think it's absolutely fantastic. It shows what an extraordinary country I live in and that refugees can fully integrate and participate in society

I see the Times is going full on attack disabled individuals as scroungers and layabouts with no consideration for how PIP is not an "out of work benefit" and how for many it is essential support to actually work and live.

The irony that the BBC blurred out the Protect the Dolls slogan on a Strictly contestant’s tshirt for their social accounts as “political” but will happily dedicate a two-part doc to the woman who uses her billions to fund lawsuits to persecute transgender people www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/...

The idea that this would be a "catastophic burden" on the economy is a real zombie fact. Even on the worst case (and wrong) scenarios dreamt up by anti-migration think-tanks it is not close to "catastrophic".

This phrasing reminds me of Pratchett's description of Ankh Morpork as "a city of 100,000 souls, and ten times more inhabitants" (but I like Chicago, so would never make that comparison)

In our course and book _Calling Bullshit_, we posit that If something seems too good, or too bad, to be true, it probably is. Now as a college professor I'm pretty confident that overreliance can AI can harm our thinking ability, but just ten minutes of use? Let's dig into this this study a bit.

A UC Berkeley researcher co-authored a study that raises profound questions about how we interact with artificial intelligence in education — and daily life.

This is a truly grotesque "trial" of a vaccine known to be safe and effective. It will in practice randomly withhold that treatment from a percentage of children to see what happens. It is absolutely the reverse of good practice.

Luis Suárez's Freaky Friday Reaction
Alt: Gif of Roy Hodgson when he was England manager smiling faintly but with some excitement and turning his head slightly to track a forward move (off screen), before his head slumps down to his front in disappointment. I also have to leave here the original alt text for this gif which is so lacking in relevance that it gave me a chuckle: Luis Suárez's Freaky Friday Reaction

Not only that, BMW is still owned by the Quandt family who trace their lineage by blood to a Nazi-supporting wealthy industrialist *and* by marriage to Joseph Goebbels and they are still pointedly less Nazi than Tesla.

the reason “AI will create so much abundance we will have a utopian society” rhetoric falls so flat is that the people building it will never, ever share their bounty unless it is taken from them and we all know it

Privatisation in a nutshell: 1) Steal from us something we own. 2) Sell us back an inferior service 3) Charge us a higher price. The pattern is the same everywhere: royal mail, water, railways, the NHS, public services, council services…

One thing I find endlessly funny about the rise of AI is that it has revealed that there is a large number of people who believe that the reason they wrote essays at school or university is their teachers were desperately waiting for them to provide a definite answer to “Lear: what’s up with him?”
