I don't know that it makes him presidential material but Ossoff's ability to just be honest about how much of a pile of shit these people really are should be a model to the party.

Yes, it's a huge deficit spend Yes, a bunch of established businesses will fail in the churn Not sure either of those matter to the median voter

Jim @jim-gras.bsky.social · 13/10/2026
Median American savings is ~ $10,000 So even ignoring FDIC, six months of $2,000/month checks makes the majority of Americans whole if their bank fails Since consumer spending is 2/3 of the US economy, the economy might just chug along if consumers have money to spend

What's interesting is that COVID may have given us a better model than "Uncle Sam bails out banks" Give people stimulus checks and then let the businesses fail

The EVs vs ICE question was answered two or three years back. It's EVs Now the fight is about the timeline

Jim @jim-gras.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
I mean, the whole subsidies for EVs thing was explicitly about using economies of scale to improve EV prices and technology So blues absolutely should be doing a victory lap. The plan worked

Theoretically, this was the strength of 538; they tried to tie local demographics to polling to figure out "oh, this subset of the population is swinging left/right"

1) Tariffs and ICE kidnapping effects aren't uniform - eg. NH might have less immigrant farm workers / diesel reliance than Iowa 2) local effects like data center noise, electricity price increase get projected into national politics - eg. NH might have fewer data centers to be pissed about

Also helps with situations where AI doesn't mean LLM - eg "AI detects cancer" type stories where the tech is actually an image classifier Imagine the headline "Combustion technology kills boy on street corner" Was he shot? Run over by a car? Blown up? We can - and should - be much more specific
001
Jim @jim-gras.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Honestly, I think the answer is "just don't say AI" "An AI hacked [whoever]" Becomes "A Large Language Model optimized for coding stole data from [whoever]" Yes it's longer, but it's also much more specific

"Like, ya' know, whatever" - Lisa Simpson and AOC (apparently)

Jim @jim-gras.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
NYT filtering out like 30% of Trump's words to make his ramblings sound almost like English while trying to make AOC sound like a Valley Girl is certainly a choice

Cops just shouldn't have guns No one should be killed by the state

Jim @jim-gras.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
I also think charity is a negative We should tax billionaires until government services render charity obsolete

Cops just shouldn't use lethal force Don't give them guns Force them to de-escalate every situation or die trying It's the fiscally responsible thing to do

There are lots of things to hate about the world today, but "journalists treating bad-faith actors as if they were normal, rational people" is absolutely one of the things I hate most. It directly contributes to so many of the other bad things

Is it possible to avoid the continuing decline in quality of consumer products brought on by corporate greed?

LLMs are not curing cancer This is why no one should use the word "AI" We should use more specific words that differentiate between useful, ethical uses of machine learning like classification or regression and unethical, un-useful uses like LLMs and grifting

John McCain respected and admired President Obama, and explicitly said they shared values like Pres. Obama says in the screencap Pretending there was bad blood between them is lost-all-touch-with-reality level revisionist history The modern GOP is a bunch of weirdos and losers for entertaining it

In case you missed it, the England fans at the world cup are enthusiastically chanting: "He's fat, with piles He's in the Epstein files Trump the Cuunt Trump the Cuuuuuntt!!!" I want to know how the pearl-clutching republican senators are going to handle it if they win.

If only there were some sort of beloved story about the perils of using a fundamentally corrupt technology created for evil ends, even if you yourself have pure motives. Ideally one which made it clear at the end that there can be no compromise with inherent evil, it must just be stamped out.

Love how the detrended graph highlights the 3 big shocks of the last decade First COVID in 2020 Then Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, which drives massive inflation as staple products from both countries dry up Then Trump takes office in 2025, and everything gets worse and worse

Cumulative inflation since 2019 is about 33% So a pre COVID $150 flight is $200 just from inflation The invasion of Ukraine absolutely fucked everyone in ways I don't think most people have internalized

My thermonuclear hot take: just get rid of tax exempt as a thing Either it's a grift, in which case tax them, or it's a valuable service, in which case tax them and then have the gov do that service instead

Also, small districts means more likely to meet your Rep and realize they're an idiot, which again makes them more swingy

No data to back it up, but I feel like a massive expansion of the House solves gerrymandering If districts are so small that a few hundred people can swing an election, dummymanders feel like a BIG risk Make the House 5000 people 2030 campaign

My toddler put a dried apricot in my water bottle and I didn't notice, took a sip in the middle of the night and it tasted so weird, shined my flashlight in there, the apricot had rehydrated and was like a perfectly round little glowing testicle in the bottom of my water bottle. Horrific
