IMO @stevesalaita.bsky.social does *really* well in a Chronicle interview that feels very gotcha ("Confessions of a Campus Radical"). Below, facing a question designed to make him 'endorse' violence, he carefully indexes who is allowed to commit violence (Israel) and who isn't ("Hamas").
Goldstein: Let’s zero in on October 7. Are you saying you wish that more pro-Palestinian voices would not disavow the kinds of violence we saw on that day? That to disavow such violence reflects a failure to understand what decolonization requires?

Salaita: Yes, and no. I want to choose my words carefully. What I object to most is how the demand to disavow violence does not exist for those on the pro-Israel side. They can discuss Israeli politics and policies and Palestinian society without having to disavow Israeli violence. The constant demand for disavowal speaks to a particular marginalization of Palestinian realities. It suggests a moral hierarchy in which Palestinians have to account for themselves in ways that the more powerful party does not.

Gutkin: Much of what became very controversial in campus politics was protests by students and faculty that seemed to endorse Hamas violence, to celebrate it with things like the Students for Justice in Palestine fliers featuring stylized images of hang gliders. That stuff incited a strong condemnatory response from critics who saw not just a failure to disavow violence but a kind of embrace of violence. Is that an example of the dynamic you’re talking about, in which the failure to disavow triggered a repressive response?

Salaita: What I want to focus on is how the pro-Palestine protesters are always being asked to account for themselves in ways that completely ignore their relationship with Israeli violence. Some of these students have seen the worst forms of violence. Some have experienced it firsthand. I don’t think it’s fair to saddle those students with a moral responsibility to distance themselves from violence that doesn’t exist for anybody else on campus.

This just-released Canada Heritage survey is a stunning piece of anti-Palestinian propaganda weaponized vs. critics of the genocide at universities. It is a reprisal against the encampment movement. Look at the evidence of ‘antisemitism’: a prof calling Israel a Zionist project—as it attests to be.
In a course that had nothing to do with Israel, my professor spent three weeks talking about Gaza and the creation of the State of Israel. He never mentioned the Holocaust as a precursor to its founding, repeatedly calling the state a “Zionist political project.”

The fragility on display here is off the charts. Doctors at Toronto’s Mt. Sinai Hospital complained that their pain wasn’t recognized in their colleague Kavita Algu’s advocacy against the genocide. Algu was ultimately forced to resign. archive.is/yTcX0
Days prior to the meeting, a group of doctors at the palliative care unit had raised concerns with their leadership about Jewish pain not being recognized in their colleagues’ public advocacy for Palestinians. The workplace was being affected by social media posts about Gaza, they told their managers on Jan. 10. The meeting to which Algu and the others were invited was an attempt to address those concerns, according to internal records that would detail the hospital’s navigation of the situation.

Covid lockdowns demonstrated, in a deeply imperfect way, the possibility of large-scale social solidarity for a higher cause. That is a prime reason why so many powerful people want us to run screaming away from them into the comforting arms of selfish individualist competition.

🔴 Lebanon’s Health Ministry said the final toll from Friday’s Israeli attacks has risen to 83 people killed and 141 wounded, with most casualties reported in southern Lebanon and others in the eastern Bekaa region.

The ministry added that since March 2, Israeli attacks have killed 4,057 people and wounded 12,121, including 135 health care and emergency workers among the dead.

🎥 Latest dispatch from Courtney in south Lebanon where scores of new attacks Saturday have killed at least 40 people, according to local reports. One of the deadliest attacks hit Qanaarit, a town in the Saida district north of the Zahrani River that had been sheltering people displaced from villages farther south. The death toll there rose to ten killed and 22 wounded, most of them women and children. ⬇️courtneybonneauimages

Another is this: 3,200 Indigenous children, at least, died at residential schools, according to the 2015 report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Residential school students died at a rate far higher than children in the rest of Canada - a negligence so deep-rooted that it came
