🌊 The GO-BGC @globaloceanbgc.bsky.social project nears its end on Oct. 31 when 500 @bgc-argo.bsky.social floats with chemical and biological sensors for ocean health will have been deployed. The array will then begin to decline as there is no future funding to replace floats as batteries are 1/2

Many years in the making, this new synthesis puts a more accurate number on soil organic C and N stocks stored away in Arctic river deltas large and small: Fuchs et al have collected soil data from these deltas and estimate a pool of ~57.7 billion tons of carbon. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

The ocean carbon cycle spans multiple scales and reservoirs, challenging efforts to build a coherent picture and
fostering misconceptions or fragmented narratives in science and public discourse. Common examples include
the belief that the biological processes control the ocean’s carbon sink (i.e., fraction of human CO2 emissions ab-
sorbed by ocean), that restoring coastal ecosystems is highly effective at mitigating climate change, or that whales
substantially contribute to carbon sequestration. We provide a comprehensive review of living and nonliving
ocean carbon stocks and fluxes—from plankton to mangroves, whales, fish, and plastics—and an integrated per-
spective on global ocean carbon cycling, disentangling well-­ supported insights from misconceptions. This syn-
thesis reaffirms the ocean’s key role as a physics-­ and chemistry-­ driven carbon sink, while clarifying the limited
contribution of coastal and open-­ ocean ecosystems to carbon sequestration and climate mitigation. We caution
against frameworks that justify marine conservation through climate mitigation—a narrative useful to draw
attention, but not always robust and unnecessary, since marine biodiversity is worth preserving regardless of its
impact on carbon.

Große Wissenslücken über die Kohlenstoffsenke im Ozean
Der Ozean absorbiert derzeit etwa ein Viertel des vom Menschen produzierten CO2 und bremst so die globale Erwärmung. Der Klimawandel verändert diese wichtige Fähigkeit jedoch. Wie genau sich die Kohlenstoffsenke im Ozean in den kommenden Jahrzehnten entwickeln wird, kann bisher jedoch nicht eindeutig gesagt werden. Dafür fehlen wichtige wissenschaftliche Daten aus einigen Meeren der Erde. Zu diesem Schluss kommt die Zwischenstaatliche Ozeanographische Kommission der UNESCO in ihrem aktuellen Bericht. Prof. Judith Hauck vom Alfred-Wegener-Institut hat an dem Bericht mitgearbeitet.

The land and ocean CO₂ sink are 25% and 7% smaller, respectively, than they would have been without the effects of climate change and variability, on average for the 2015-2024 period. Combined, this is equivalent to the total sink (land and ocean) being nearly 20% smaller than otherwise. /10

Total anthropogenic CO2 emissions – the sum of fossil & land-use change emissions – have grown more slowly in the past decade1 (0.3% per year on average), compared to the previous decade (1.9% per year). The growth in fossil emissions is offset by the decrease in land-use change emissions. 8/

Good news: 35 countries have decreased their fossil CO2 emissions significantly (p<0.05) while growing their economies in the decade 2015-20244, twice as many as during the previous decade (2005-2014; 18 countries. These 35 countries account for 27% of global fossil CO2 emissions. 5/
