Jess Sheehan @jfsheehan.bsky.social · 24/09/2026Underdeveloped object permanence. If people don't live where I can see them, they stop existing, and that's good. If it's 50 trees being cut from a forest Elsewhere in the state rather than 1 tree on my city block, that's a climate win because I didn't ever personally witness tree removal. 1104
Jess Sheehan @jfsheehan.bsky.social · 24/09/2026"in the midst of a reelection campaign" - she's an incumbent Democrat in the bluest state running in what is likely a blue wave year. What is there to be afraid of? The embarrassment of winning by merely a large margin, rather than an extremely large margin? 1152
Jess Sheehan @jfsheehan.bsky.social · 11/09/2026I also see no reason to take their word for it that the previous units were "modestly priced." In Cambridge, MA? Are the modestly priced apartments in the room with us right now? 052
Jess Sheehan @jfsheehan.bsky.social · 11/09/2026I bet you could crowdsource the money to print and mail it. I'd contribute. More than anything though we need to bring this energy to next year's council election. They're super angry, don't mind lying, and have both money and time to burn. Gonna be tough to hold onto a pro-housing majority. 220
Jess Sheehan @jfsheehan.bsky.social · 11/09/2026This one makes sense if you consider what they want is control. One has parking, the other doesn't, and they didn't get to personally decide either one! Jess Sheehan @jfsheehan.bsky.social · 02/09/2026This isn't an anti-Erika post. She won the race she ran in, just as her competitors were trying to do. It's just that this race was unusual in that it gave voters a genuine choice among several viable competing policy visions and theories of change, only for FPTP to flatten that somewhat. 100
Jess Sheehan @jfsheehan.bsky.social · 02/09/2026I think this is true and that it's classy of Burhan to say it publicly. But I also think this is a race that would have benefited from RCV. Two things are true here: 1) Erika won fair and square, and 2) a majority of voters preferred another candidate. RCV would resolve that disconnect. 120
Jess Sheehan @jfsheehan.bsky.social · 02/09/2026Sometimes that "how dare you" attitude spills over to supporters. The strength of incumbency in this state gives people the idea that a challenger is only appropriate if the incumbent has been involved in a scandal, and otherwise it's unfair. I don't love it. 020
Jess Sheehan @jfsheehan.bsky.social · 02/09/2026I don't think I've ever met an elected who doesn't take the mere existence of a challenger incredibly personally. I wonder how specific that is to MA. 120

Jess Sheehan @jfsheehan.bsky.social · 20/08/2026A lower residential tax rate means a higher purchase price. A higher purchase price means a larger down payment required to secure good financing. That favors people with lots of liquid wealth over people who merely make middle class incomes. 041

Jess Sheehan @jfsheehan.bsky.social · 30/07/2026There's always room for improvement, but Cambridge is actually pretty good about making city data publicly accessible online.
