Continuously baffled that Kash Patel, the kind of utter nerd who pays his respects to the departed by saying "see you in Valhalla," is the head of an organisation as infamously jock-heavy as the FBI. He'll be lucky if he isn't given a swirly on his way out.

Root canal part 3: after being so proud of myself for being such a good patient the last two times, this time I choked, got a gobful of dental solution that burned my throat, and nearly puked while reclining at a 60-degree angle. Pride cometh etc, etc.

Is it possible that some Gen Z/Gen Alpha people deliberately post ignorant takes because they're curious about something, but they don't want it showing up in their search history, and they know that some oldhead will eventually respond with a mini-lecture containing the info they're looking for?

There are kids over on the other thing complaining about Hellraiser Revival having too much BDSM stuff in it, and in the midst of my eye-rolling I had a thought: is this how they look for information nowadays?

“Rarely has stupidity been so nasty, or nastiness so stupid… In fact, if Frankenstein decided to make a monster assembled entirely from human flaws, he would make a Trump.” – Nate White, 𝘓𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘰𝘯 𝘛𝘪𝘮𝘦𝘴, 2019 Illustration: 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘎𝘦𝘯𝘪𝘶𝘴, pen and ink by Dutch artist Siegfried Woldhek, 2019
Pen and ink caricature of Donald Trump titled "Stable Genius" by Dutch artist Siegfried Woldhek, originally published on October 12, 2019, in the Dutch newspaper NRC Handelsblad.

The drawing of a grotesquely snarling Trump features heavy, chaotic cross-hatching and a frantic, wildly expressive aesthetic resembling the eerie, dark illustrations of Stephen Gammell from the “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark” book series.

Woldhek, a widely recognized Dutch illustrator and portraitist is known for his sharp political drawings and caricatures of world leaders. The title “Stable Genius” is a mocking reference to a phrase Trump frequently used to describe himself.

Accompanying quote is from a piece entitled “Why Some Brits Detest Trump” by British writer Nate White, originally published in the London Times in 2019.

Read White’s entire piece here. (It’s well worth your time!)

The best acquisition my sixth-class library ever made. I'm treating these as a single extended work. It's The Exorcist, Night of the Living Dead, Blood on Satan's Claw and The Wicker Man, in a world where rodents and other creatures have folk cultures and mystical traditions. Y'know, for kids!
The cover of "The Dark Portal" by Robin Jarvis: book one of the Deptford Mice Trilogy. It features an arch in an old brick sewer, in which a pair of glowing red eyes hover in darkness. Before it, a mouse tries to keep herself hidden. The cover of "The Crystal Prison" by Robin Jarvis: book 2 of the Deptford Mice Trilogy. The image features a terrified mouse with his back to a corn stalk, surrounded by wisps of fog; the viewer is in the POV of the thing chasing him - some horrible unseen monster whose clawed fingers reach out from either side. The cover of "The Final Reckoning" by Robin Jarvis: book 3 of the Deptford Mice Trilogy. The image is of a lanky mouse with a scarf and a pudding-bowl haircut, suspended over a city as he clings on to a bat for dear life.

More cool stuff from the wall of the Mechanics' Institute in Limerick. It's amazing how long some of these orgs have been around:
A stone bas-relief with the emblem of the Mechanics' Imstitute, founded in 1810. The central symbol is an arm wielding a mallet, and over it is a horseshoe-shaped banner saying "Mechanics' Institute." Anove this is another banner that says "LABOR OMNIA VINCET." A heraldic bas-relief plaque for the Ancient Guild of Incorporated Brick and Stone Layers of Limerick, established in 1677. In the centre, a man in a white tunic and a golden dragon stand on either side of a shield emblazoned with the tools of stonemasonry (hammers, compasses, adze etc). The background is green and the whole lot is flanked with images of castles, pillars, lighthouses etc.A heraldic bas-relief plaque for the Regular Operative Plasterers' Society, established in 1670. In the centre, two golden gryphons stand on either side of a shield emblazoned with a hammer and trowel. The background is green, and underneath, a banner reads "Brotherly Love Continued."A heraldic bas-relief plaque for the Ancient Guild of Irish National Painters and Decorators, established in 1670. In the centre, a man in a mauve tunic and a golden unicorn stand on either side of a shield emblazoned with indistinct symbols that I presume are painters' pallets. The background is green, and there's a scrolling banner underneath that says "Love, Honour, Obedience."

This kind of highlights yet again how people meet AI more than halfway because they want it to succeed. Even back in the old days when they had competitions to make a machine that could pass the Turing Test, judges would go easy on the computers and allow silly margins of error.
