I remember that! I also remember Bret Easton Ellis playing the role of the Grinch that day and sneering at the decision.

Thank you for every word of this. I’ve been online long enough to be able to recognize everyone you’re talking about—and to have unfollowed them all long ago when their “do something!” schtick took over their personalities.

Bernie Sanders ruined The Onion. Once the editors and writers glommed onto his campaign they decided to go in on “all Democrats (except Bernie) bad” and it’s been all downhill ever since.

My god, Harris is 100% right about everything in this video. So much of journalism now is just the guys in Almost Famous telling young Cameron Crowe “just make us look cool.”

I feel like the debate about what parts of AI are good and what parts are bad should wait until we solve the worldwide crisis caused by the fact that almost of all of its evangelists in both tech and govt are morally, intellectually, and ethically unequipped to oversee it, when not downright evil.

I've been a Sandra Hüller Stan ever since Toni Erdmann and I'm so glad everyone is caught up to what a major talent she is. I would love to see her play Hedda Gabler someday.

This hardly bears explanation, but Troy Jackson has pledged not to fund military aid to Israel, has refused campaign funding from AIPAC, and has referred to Gaza as a genocide. It's not remotely clear what people like Tkacik even want.

Moe Tkacik’s descent from founding Jezebel and setting the tone for internet commentary to unhinged antisemitism should be studied in journalism schools. (And this isn’t the most antisemitic thing she’s ever tweeted, btw. The “let’s nuke Israel” tweet is the worst.)

Duncan Sheik’s score for Spring Awakening brilliantly captured the rage and hard-earned wisdom of adolescence. The Deaf Theater West production of it remains one of the greatest experiences of my theatergoing life. I’ll miss him greatly. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/18/a...

Duncan Sheik, Who Traded Pop Stardom for Broadway, Dies at 56
Weary of the heartthrob label after his 1996 hit “Barely Breathing,” he pivoted to musical theater and won two Tonys for composing “Spring Awakening.”

Steven Spielberg spent the early 2000s processing 9/11 and it reached its apex with Munich, one of his greatest films. This devastating final shot irked me when I first saw it; now I think it's the only way the film could have ended.

In mid-August of 2001, my dad and I went to the top of the World Trade Center and saw the view from up there. Less than a month later, nobody would ever see that exact view again. I was and am grateful.

It's incredible to me how the Republican reaction to George W. Bush after he left office was "never heard of him!" The man did generational damage surpassed only by Trump, and his party was never forced to take any responsibility for it.

I'm still cheesed about the fact that Democrats blew it with North Carolina, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania in the 2022 cycle. We should have won the first two, and the one we *did* win is now every Democrat's face on the dartboard.

I probably sent 2000 texts for Lamb's campaign because I knew how imperative it was he win and Fetterman lose. When they called the primary for Fetterman I was as depressed as I've ever been over an election.

if you use racist language to talk about a Black person you don't like, you are a racist. if you support people who use racist language to talk about a Black person they don't like, you are also a racist. it is very easy to avoid using racist language about Black people with whom you disagree.
