I lived in a building the Antoons owned that got condemned, maybe while I lived there? I do vividly remember getting ready for class and seeing (on live TV) the second plane hit the South Tower of the WTC on 9/11 from that apartment. Called my dad cause scared, & he said I should still go to class.

Same thing happening to journalism as at universities following the massive federal budget cuts. You can't break institutions, cast off multiple age cohorts of journalists/scholars, & just flip switches later & expect go back to the ex ante SQ. The downstream systemic effects are huge & lasting.

Media consolidation can really come back to haunt. City Paper was acquired by the Blocks in 2023 (after orig being indie-owned, then bought by the Butler Eagle in 2016). We had 2 great alt weeklies but in 2001, the City Paper bought InPgh; similar to how the PG bought the Pittsburgh Press in '92).

It didn’t have to be this way. But the Blocks have been dismantling print news in PGH for decades, starting with the purchase and absorption of their rival paper, accelerating with their move to stop print daily in 2018 (making Pittsburgh the largest US city without a print daily at the time).
