Government is finally shaking up the Energy Performance Certificates (EPC) system in England after many years of criticism about what a blunt measure they are. Yet, as Amy Rushton reports, as ever the replacement has some unintended consequences (story in front of paywall)

The long read: On 14 January this year, army and navy squads faced an unprecedented challenge: one bomb on a Plymouth building site, another floating on a dredger in Exmouth. That afternoon, the clock started ticking

The "zionism is racism" motion that has just passed on the Green Party's conference floor is truly gross, and deeply racist. The party's MPs deserve some credit for opposing it, though they should've done so more stridently and sooner. This is now a millstone around the party's necks. Deservedly.

There's actually a line in the Guardian story that made me wonder about this: “It doesn’t matter what the leadership thinks,” Speitan said in a recent video, adding: “We are certainly not here to negotiate the terms of our liberation or oppression with any of our oppressors.”

Does that mean they shouldn’t be building? I wouldn’t agree with that; the C3 is Southwark and they’ve done some really good looking new build project. Building new homes can help bring up landlords’ performance if they’re well done. But has being a council raised standards?

Jess McCabe @jessmccabe.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Of the English councils in the top 10 building the most homes, only two have been inspected by the regulator and they both got failing grades - a C3 (essentially: serious failings) and C4 (very serious failings).

In Burnham’s speech he referenced the democratic accountability of councils versus other social housing providers. Expect us to spend more time analysing this in the next while . There is a question here because many councils actually have failing grades from the regulator 🫠

Burnham talked again about charging councils with a new generation of large scale housebuilding. This data tries to answer the basic question of what the councils’ starting position is; how prepared are they for the job?

Also while we celebrate some brilliant projects, there are questions to be asked and scrutiny over these development programmes if Westminster really wants councils to play a significant role in affordable housing development, when they currently do so much less than housing associations

The top of the chart is absolutely dominated by London councils, with Scotland and Wales making a good show of it too. (Northern Irish councils aren't able to perform any housing functions for historic reasons linked to discrimination)
