Good to hear the Prime Minister saying to @bbclaurak.bsky.social that crude cuts to welfare just push costs elsewhere, and the problems we need to address are the economic failures that put pressure on our social security system. He’s right about this.

Really saddened to hear the news that Keith Wakefield has passed away, he was such an encouragement to me when I was a young councillor navigating process and egos, and he laid the blueprint for so much of the work that has made Leeds stand out nationally in the last decade.

PR stunt? Thames Water plans to restart desalination plant – after drought ends. It can produce 150m litres of water a day, but restricted to 75m litres. TW loses 569.1m litres (24%) of water a day to leaks. Little of new water will reach customers. Can't cover years of neglect and exploitation

Anyone that knows Brick Lane in London recognises that building a datacenter in the middle of it is absolutely the most stupid thing to do. Then there's the issue of resources, not least water in the rapidly drying city. Overriding local government is the opposite of what Burnham claims he supports.

Is your ability to drink enough fluid and maybe have an occasional shower a priority for anyone? Well, it depends. Are you critical national infrastructure? Are you? Really?
The government has designated datacentres as critical national infrastructure, on the basis that their loss or compromise could result in “major detrimental impact on the availability, integrity or delivery of essential services” and “significant impact on national security, national defence, or the functioning of the state”.

This is fucking terrifying
Separate research supports the concern. Anat Perry, a Helen Putnam Fellow at Harvard’s Radcliffe Institute and associate professor of psychology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, co-authored a paper in Science examining how sycophantic AI responses erode users’ ability to calibrate their own judgment. The paper found that when AI systems consistently affirm a user’s position, the user’s capacity for independent evaluation degrades over time.

Joanna Stern, NBC’s chief technology analyst and author of “I Am Not a Robot: My Year Using AI to Do (Almost) Everything,” has documented the creep of AI dependency in daily life. Her reporting has shown how users begin with low-stakes queries, such as what to cook for dinner or what to wear, and gradually escalate to consequential decisions about careers, finances, and relationships. The trajectory from convenience to reliance is difficult to reverse once established.

Not enough water for UK’s datacentre plans, trade body says
Industry says government’s failure to address cooling demands means AI growth plans are ‘fatally flawed’ The UK will not have enough water for future datacentres, the water industry has said in stark criticism of the government’s AI growth plans. Datacentres rely on large amounts of water to manage the heat generated by densely packed servers. Cooling towers, chillers and humidification systems make direct use of this water, with large volumes also consumed indirectly through high electrical power needs. Continue reading...
