At that moment the radio was playing the brand-new "Charlie Brown" by the Coasters. I knew about Charlie Brown from the newspaper comic and was surprised to learn that he smoked.

A Peanuts strip from June 13, 1973, the culmination of a series where Charlie Brown sees the rising sun as a giant baseball in the sky. He sits outside waiting for the sunrise: “It’s getting light…the sun is coming up…I can’t look! I can’t stand the suspense! But I have to look! I to know! Will I see the sun, or will I see a baseball! What will I see?” To his shock, he sees a giant Alfred E. Neumann head with “What! Me Worry?” over it. When I first saw this strip I was too young to have ever seen or heard of Mad magazine & had a big internal WHAT IS THAT FACE?! freakout.

I needed this Mutt and Jeff strip for my slideshow but every copy on the internet looks really crappy. So I tracked it down using my magic NYU key and now I pass the savings on to you, the consumer.
Five-panel Mutt and Jeff strip by Bud Fisher, June 3, 1942. Jeff crawls on the sidewalk under a streetlamp. Cop: "Hey, what're you doin'?" Jeff: "I'm looking for my quarter I dropped!" "Did you drop it here?" "No, I dropped it two blocks down the street!" "Then why are you looking for it here?" "Because the light is better here!" Final panel: the cop is on all fours beside him, searching too.

Yes: it manipulated code that is legally owned by the Nintendo Corporation, and that is technically a crime. But ultimately I think copyright law needs to be updated to reflect our new reality.

It is a craft, like a pant or a shoe, and either can be both an expression of labor and love, and also a mass commercial product that produces profit and can be put to one’s own use how you see fit. If you can’t see how the code of Super Mario Bros. is both, that is not my problem.

Sure, you're having the thing made—you know, like your shoes, or your pants, or most things you own. People who want to take pride in their hand-crafted work should do so. But if you want it to be qualitatively distinct from the synthetic, it's wise to pick a medium that is not 100% notational.

For ones that were finished/successful, sure, but that’s just survivor’s bias: nobody who didn’t enjoy carving neural grooves made out of hexadecimals and three-letter codes in their brain (I do, a little) would ever manage to accomplish their goal, because the juice just wasn’t worth the squeeze.

sure, that’s how charismatic technologies tend to work…we shall see! but either way, spending $20-$30 million dollars on anything worth anything has to be pretty good, considering the replacement-value item that rich people spend $20-$30 million dollars on (sex boat)

it’s a lab accident where people who were trying to be way more clever discovered that you can use linear algebra to construct a solar panel for Saussurean langue. It doesn’t belong to any person any more than the concept of “movable type” does.

good morning
From Jim Woodring’s “Seeing Things”

I first tasted electricity in 1959, when I was six.
In accordance with my desires at the time I was exploring the house. Under the couch I found a fresh 9-volt battery. Having no idea what it was, I touched the terminals to my tongue and was appalled to feel the vile stuff coursing into my body.
With a convulsion of fear and shock I hurled the battery away from me. It struck a burning light bulb in a pole lamp and popped it. I wailed and my father came running in. After he had sorted out the situation he consoled me about the light bulb and attempted to educate me about the battery.
He told me that electricity made all our machines run, that it could be controlled and played with, and that it was dangerous but that a little 9-volt battery could never hurt me. To
make the point he stuck out his tongue and pressed the battery to it vigorously.
T'hee?" he asked.
"Thee?
Yes, I saw, all right. I saw my father, about whom I was somewhat ambivalent anyway, staring at me with popeyed fervor, extending his tongue like a demon and guzzling electricity.
After I had refused several hundred times to put my tongue on the battery again, just to see how harmless it was, kind of fun, even, my father took me up to the hill behind our house and showed me the world below. He pointed out all the antennas that sprouted from the houses and surrounding hills. He told me that the air in the valley was awash in waves: radio waves, television waves, infrared waves and microwaves, and that all of these good and helpful waves brought music and cartoons and distant news into our house and into all the other houses.
• And what made all this possible? Electricity.
Electricity was needed to send and receive the broadcasts. It was everywhere; we could not do without it. Our homes were full of it. Even the airplanes that flew overhead, the Lockheed Constellations and Boeing 707s had electricity running through them.

For all of the bluster about leftist egalitarian professors, it only takes someone below their station questioning their takes once (often in a very normal and not-aggressive way) to bring out the "how DARE a lowborn such as you speak to me in such a way"

sure. he has retrofitted a model of artificial intelligence which is mathematically impossible in order to speak about artificial intelligence which actually exists, then used a metaphysics which is so insane that it is virtually impossible to explain to another person to predict doom.
