At that moment the radio was playing the brand-new "Charlie Brown" by the Coasters. I knew about Charlie Brown from the newspaper comic and was surprised to learn that he smoked.

The Sweetie-Pie From Tenafly Coming Out Of Her Well To Shame Humanity
Album cover for Lesley Gore Sings of Mixed-Up Hearts on Mercury Records. A large circular photo dominates the pale blue cover: Gore, with a voluminous auburn flip hairdo and green eyes, rests her cheek against her hand and looks directly at the camera with a faint, knowing smile. She wears a blue-and-white gingham shirt and a ring on one finger. The title runs down the upper left in brown and black type, above a track list that includes “She’s a Fool,” “You Don’t Own Me,” and “Sunshine, Lollipops & Rainbows.”

well, it's been 30 years and they've finally honored Richard Garfield, so I guess it's time to get back into Magic
Swords to Plowshares

Its controller gains life equal to its power.Counterspell
Magic: The Gathering card, Counterspell (two blue mana), Secret Lair Garfield art by Caleb Meurer. On a green background, Garfield slaps Jon across the face under a big "SLAP!" sound effect. Magic: The Gathering card, Dark Ritual (one black mana), Secret Lair Garfield art by Gregg Schigiel. A groggy Garfield in striped pajamas, a nightcap, and bunny slippers holds a steaming red mug of coffee, with his teddy bear Pooky sitting behind him. Rules text: Instant. Add three black mana.Fog
Magic: The Gathering card, Fog (one green mana), Secret Lair Garfield art by Caleb Meurer. I needed this Mutt and Jeff strip for my slideshow but every copy on the internet looks really crappy. So I tracked it down using my magic NYU key and now I pass the savings on to you, the consumer.
Five-panel Mutt and Jeff strip by Bud Fisher, June 3, 1942. Jeff crawls on the sidewalk under a streetlamp. Cop: "Hey, what're you doin'?" Jeff: "I'm looking for my quarter I dropped!" "Did you drop it here?" "No, I dropped it two blocks down the street!" "Then why are you looking for it here?" "Because the light is better here!" Final panel: the cop is on all fours beside him, searching too.

good morning
From Jim Woodring’s “Seeing Things”

I first tasted electricity in 1959, when I was six.
In accordance with my desires at the time I was exploring the house. Under the couch I found a fresh 9-volt battery. Having no idea what it was, I touched the terminals to my tongue and was appalled to feel the vile stuff coursing into my body.
With a convulsion of fear and shock I hurled the battery away from me. It struck a burning light bulb in a pole lamp and popped it. I wailed and my father came running in. After he had sorted out the situation he consoled me about the light bulb and attempted to educate me about the battery.
He told me that electricity made all our machines run, that it could be controlled and played with, and that it was dangerous but that a little 9-volt battery could never hurt me. To
make the point he stuck out his tongue and pressed the battery to it vigorously.
T'hee?" he asked.
"Thee?
Yes, I saw, all right. I saw my father, about whom I was somewhat ambivalent anyway, staring at me with popeyed fervor, extending his tongue like a demon and guzzling electricity.
After I had refused several hundred times to put my tongue on the battery again, just to see how harmless it was, kind of fun, even, my father took me up to the hill behind our house and showed me the world below. He pointed out all the antennas that sprouted from the houses and surrounding hills. He told me that the air in the valley was awash in waves: radio waves, television waves, infrared waves and microwaves, and that all of these good and helpful waves brought music and cartoons and distant news into our house and into all the other houses.
• And what made all this possible? Electricity.
Electricity was needed to send and receive the broadcasts. It was everywhere; we could not do without it. Our homes were full of it. Even the airplanes that flew overhead, the Lockheed Constellations and Boeing 707s had electricity running through them.

the magic of T-Bone Burnett is that I still can't figure out if this is a "Christian singer-songwriter is required to put his face on the cover of his debut and so picks an ego-deflating photo" situation or a "we took 50 pictures of him in concert and this was the best one we got" situation

Interview with Jim Woodring in The Comics Journal:

Then I worked on one of the masterpieces of shit - it was called Turbo Teen, about a guy who turned into a car. Not just any car, it was a big muscle car. And the people who wrote that show were such jackasses that ... I remember there was one character who was dancing at a dance in one scene, and this guy called out, "Get it down, Jack!" - the writer evidently couldn't quite remember if it was
"Get it on" or "Get down," and then to just give this '80s show an authentic '50s touch,
"Jack!" It was just so sad! [Laughter:] Somebody brought in an anti-drug pamphlet that showed on the cover a horribly deformed baby whose head looked like a wad of silly putty that had been mangled, and John hung it up on the door and had it saying, "Oh no, I'm turning into Turbo Teen!" That summed it up nicely.

Page's philosophy was ambient miking - letting the sound travel to distant microphones rather than putting them right on the instruments. "Nobody was doing that," he said, explaining his belief that drums "had to breathe." Johns and
