A *massive* overhaul of phys-ed, nutrition + sex-ed is underway in Manitoba. The only dedicated education reporter in MB, I've spent the better part of back-to-school season combing over curriculum (new + old) for @winnipegfreepress.com. Here's an #mbed thread with all our #wfp coverage. 1/x

Back to it before I start my real job

Now time to go to bed as it's an early start, and we're going to Home Depot tomorrow to get drywall stuff, and rent a truck, because apparently you can't rent a truck from Home Depot without a vehicle registered in your name. Drivers License? No. Do you own a vehicle? OK. Nuttery.

I am exhausted. Renos are on-going, we're staying at my parents place while they are in Europe (lucky), and I haven't had a good sleep in weeks. But our new kitchen will be nice.

If you're wanting to move from Trakt given their API shenanigans, I started a rough little script or two that helps move your watch history from Trakt (or Tautulli) to SIMKL without having to subscribe. If you can, support SIMKL though, they are awesome. github.com/jshields-ca/... #SIMKL #Trakt

Another big step forward on the kitchen/hallway/pantry renovations. Demo is a lot of fun, I think @hannalittle.bsky.social would agree. 😍 She's a beast 💪

I've seen everyone sharing that US Dialect Quiz so I decided to make my own, much crappier, CANADIAN DIALECT QUIZ to guess where in Canada you're from

A flow chart I have created with multiple questions and the answers determine where you're from.

Question 1 is do you call it a hydro bill (which then branches down to ON, QC, BC, MB) or an electric bill (which then branches down to SK, AB, NS, NB, PEI, NL)

Question 2 is do you call it a cabin (BC, MB, AB, SK) cottage (ON and atlantic) camp (northern Ontario) chalet (QC) or bungalow (Cape Breton)

To delineate BC from MB: do you call it dinner or supper

To delineate southern Ontario rural or big city: have you heard of a stag & doe

To delineate SK from AB: do you call a hoodie a bunnyhug

And finally to delineate NL from the other atlantic provinces: whaddayat? (Correct answer: dis is it b'y)

I wrote a thing. Trying to be more active, not only updating the projects, but sharing some thoughts on things I am actively maintaining or trying to use. Playnite has been awesome - especially with the emulator support. Give it a read!

I may or may not have been so heads down on some projects that I haven't even checked this site. Hope you're all doing well. If you're curious, there are some updates to check out: scootr.ca * updated project list + home lab information jeremyshields.ca * polished the look/feel and layout

Wow. Shitty move Trakt, changing the access to APIs behind a monthly subscription. Broke my Plextraktsync 😔 Going to have to pivot to Simkl.

Building my first @grafana.bsky.social dashboard for my #homelab, and it was pretty intimidating at first... But as I start to move through building out my dashboard for my 4 machines (1 remote, 3 LAN), and start adding exporters for more data, I'm seeing it come together. My own NOC. 🤓

There was a few ants in my basement, and I don't appreciate them deciding to come in without paying rent. First year I didn't put out the stake bait for them, so I guess thats my mistake... Consider the house freshly stocked and protected.

I was intrigued by the idea of finding pages I can't remember details about but once I turned it on I regretted it. Still, Firefox is my jam. My chromium backup is Brave but I prefer sticking to Firefox for the amazing ad blocking. It's what got me back to using it from Chrome a couple years ago.

Not sure about this 'Smart Window' thing @firefox.com ... Maybe I'm just not seeing the use-case for it, but I guess they gotta compete with the other options out there?

Rail companies: We can't move outside the city, it's expensive and we already have the infrastructure. The Transcona Stockyards were ONCE OUTSIDE THE CITY, until the city was built around it. We can definitely move rail yards.

Oh definitely, I'm not a blind-AI-love kinda guy. I'm a "how can I practically use this to enhance my work / dev / homelab" kinda person. I still want to UNDERSTAND what it does and learn from it. It's been a solid learning partner for Linux, when I run into a problem I'm not familiar with.

I confess, Gemini is useful to create BASH scripts to make a task easier occasionally. Like I wanted to delete all of the Japan, Europe and other non-english region ROMs from my filesystem, and I was able to make that happen far faster with a script. Things I enjoy about Linux.
