In addition to spending less money and making fewer new grants, SBE also dramatically narrowed where it made those new grants. Areas such as economics, sociology, and archaeology received few to no grants.
Grantmaking gutted
The National Science Foundation’s Directorate for Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences (SBE) awarded far fewer new awards than typical in fiscal year 2026—just 91. (The fiscal year runs from 1 October to 30 September.) Most of the new grants focused on cognitive science and artificial intelligence, in alignment with White House priorities; offices that support fields such as economics, sociology, and research ethics, as well as postdoctoral fellowships, awarded no grants at all.

Du poids des contrats à durée déterminée sur la limitation de la liberté académique: l'ex 🇬🇧 "Instrumentalisation of time as a barrier to academic freedom for research: The fixed-term faculty experience in UK universities" by C. Kissoon & T. Karran 👀 doi.org/10.1177/1350...
Instrumentalisation of time as a barrier to academic freedom for research: The fixed-term faculty experience in UK universities
Chavan Sharma Kissoonhttps://orcid.org/0000-0002-8155-7972 and Terence Karran
Abstract
The UK boasts the world’s second strongest higher education (HE) system. Unlike most other HE systems globally, employment in UKHE is characterised by the absence of tenure and the preponderance of fixed-term contracts, which can significantly impact working conditions and the exercise of academic freedom. Yet, the relationship between fixed-term employment and academic freedom remains empirically under-researched. This study explores the ways in which academic freedom for research is shaped and constrained by UKHE organisational practices. Drawing from the open text data gathered from 195 fixed-term respondents in a survey distributed to University and College Union (UCU) members that overall gathered 2028 responses, the article provides a novel explanatory lens with which to understand how university organisational practices can stymie academic freedom for research. Through application of the concept of constitutive effects to the ways in which universities instrumentalise time as a managerial tool, the paper identifies three barriers to academic freedom for research that institutions create for scholars employed fixed-term, conceptualised here as (i) employers not permitting faculty time for research at the contractual level (no time permitted); (ii) employers timing scholars out from research through workloading practices (timed out); and (iii) employers wasting faculty time with institutionally mandated research-adjacent tasks (time wasted). Through this conceptualisation, the article illuminates how UK university organisational practices can undermine academic freedom for research for those employed on a time-limited contractual arrangement, and highlights the risks to academic freedom in countries that are adopting a UK-style model.

I am sick of some media uncritically repeating Rand Paul's misrepresentation of Fauci's journal about the Huanan market. In late Jan 2020, it was a common commentary that the market may not be the origin of the outbreak, b/c of a Lancet paper on early cases ▫️1/6 www.paul.senate.gov/wp-content/u...
It now appears using epi data and genomic data that the first infection was in early
December and was not connected to the market. The infections spread among people
weeks before the Chinese reported that they were dealing with a new infection and that
gave the virus time to establish itself in multigenerational (sustained) spread.
Remember, early on the Chinese were saying that there is no human to human
transmission and all the original 27 cases were from the market. Now we know the
market was not the source, it was the amplifier. Having said that, somewhere the virus
jumped from animals to humans.

Abstract
Generative large language models (LLMs) entered scientific writing at scale after the public release of ChatGPT in November 2022, but their adoption in sociological research remains largely unmapped. This visualization estimates the share of LLM-modified sentences in 1.49 million abstracts from sociology papers indexed in OpenAlex between January 2018 and December 2025, using the distributional alpha estimator developed by Liang and colleagues. By tracing change over time, across substantive subfields, and across author groups, it provides a field-level view of how rapidly LLM-assisted writing has diffused through sociology. The visualization highlights three patterns. First, estimated LLM modification rose from near zero before late 2022 to 24.3 percent of abstract sentences in July–December 2025. Second, adoption varies substantially and persistently across subfields: empirical and applied areas show the highest estimated uptake, while theory-oriented subfields remain lowest. Third, data from the post-ChatGPT era show that LLM-assisted writing is also more prevalent among younger scholars, authors from less prestigious institutions, and publications in less prestigious outlets. Together, these patterns show that LLM use in sociology has become widespread but remains unevenly distributed across scholarly communities.
