when some people say "Bluesky is a toxic anti-AI place" I am always a little irritated. Most of social media is teeming with AI generated images and other media, and the pro-AI crowd is all over politics, media and power. What makes you so resistant to the idea critics might have ONE space?

It was November 1959, and Paris Match trailed a young Jane Fonda through the streets of New York at the very beginning of her career. She was at that peculiar threshold where one is neither quite anonymous nor yet a star, having just completed her first film, Tall Story, with Anthony Perkins. Her days were split between Lee Strasberg’s Actors Studio, dance classes, and rehearsals with her boyfriend, actor and dancer Timmy Everett. In the interstices of this embryonic stardom, she scooped ice cream at Hicks & Son on Fifth Avenue for pocket money and for the pleasure of treating her friends to dinner.

There was a time, apparently, when Jane Fonda fancied herself a painter and decamped to Paris. Acting, she claimed, was not her intended path. “I can’t stand actors,” she confided to Paris Match, making a solitary exception for her father. When the inevitable comparisons to Brigitte Bardot surfaced, she dismissed them with a shrug: “No. I look like Henry Fonda.”

Paris Match summed her up with a prediction: “Jane Fonda will be a star like Dad.”

Photographs by Paul Slade, 1959–60.
