One of the wildest things I've learned from the #Victoriocity podcast is that Isambard Kingdom Brunel was, in fact, a real person, despite sounding like he should have come straight from the writers' imaginations.

I've been very lucky to have a few published authors join me on Discworl Order. @jensugden.bsky.social , co creator of Victoriocity and co author of High Vaultage, talked about the 1st Discworld novel that she read: Maskerade.

Two paperback books on a slightly unkempt beige carpet (I probably need to find a better background ;) ).

On the left is High Vaultage by Chris & Jen Sugden. It's black with art deco electric blue & pink lines and mirrored images of a London sky line in the same colours.

On the right its Maskerade by Terry Pratchett. It is the original Josh Kirby cover and it contains multiple opera singers, an orchestra, a lot of fancy interior architecture, a witch and a very short man with a helmet and an axe. The lack of beard and context suggests that is Nobby Nobbs. This angle of the cover does not show the troll playing a tuba.

"As in all societies, except perhaps the happy ones, the news in Even Greater London was everywhere." @jensugden.bsky.social and @chrissugden.bsky.social speak truth. In this case, a deeply depressing truth. #Victoriocity #HighVaultage

Its the weekend, and over here its perfect weather for reading outside. Here are a few books that remind me of Discworld or Pratchett in one way or another: This batch of books by RJ Barker, Robert Jackson Bennett, James Alistair Henry and Chris & Jen Sugden are all fantasy crime mysteries.

Four fantasy detective fiction books on grass.
Clockwise from top left:
Mortedant's Peril by RJ Barker
A Drop of Corruption by Robert Jackson Bennett
Pagans by James Alistair Henry
High Vaultage by Chris & Jen Sugden

Weekend reading! I'm back to Lessons in Chemistry & it is very good. Over 75% through it now. Next up is High Vaultage by Chris Sugden & Jen Sugden, which looks like a fun steampunk mystery. #BookSky #amreading

Synopsis to High Vaultage by Chris Sugden: EVEN GREATER LONDON, 1887.

An uninterrupted urban plane encompassing the entire lower half of England and, for complex reasons, only the upper third of the Isle of Wight. The immense Tower casts electricity through the sky, powering the mind-boggling mechanisms of the city. The engineer-army of Isambard Kingdom Brunel swarms across the capital, building, demolishing, and rebuilding whatever they see fit. And at the heart of it all sits the country's first private detective agency.

Archibald Fleet and Clara Entwhistle hoped things would pick up quickly for their new enterprise. No-one is taking them seriously, but their break will come soon. Definitely. Probably.

Meanwhile, police are baffled by a series of impossible bank robberies, their resources absorbed by the case. Which means that when a woman witnesses a kidnapping, Fleet-Entwhistle Private Investigations is the only place she can turn for help. They're more than happy to oblige!

But what's the motive behind the kidnap? As Clara and Fleet investigate, they find more than they could ever have imagined . . .

The book I'm reading turns out to be called High Vaultage, a comic British steampunk mystery full of gems like this

The difficulty with being in covernment —as any honourable member of Parliament would tell you, if only they could be relied upon to answer the question — is that it is impossible to keep all of your constituents happy all of the time.
In theory this didn't matter all that much, So long as you could keep enough of your constituents happy to return you at the next election — or, if not happy, then at least unable to imagine a better tomorrow.
