They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

Declines also just correlate with the rise of the AI bubble on somewhat coincidental terms. *all* at-home entertainment was overinvested in during the peak of covid, and we're experiencing a hangover crash from that, for example, which is now being compounded by AI-driven misinvestment.

In both film and video games, you see a ton of *project cancellations* and a general difficulty in funding new projects, which wouldn't be the case if AI was displacing workers in producing those products—you'd expect the opposite, in fact, if it was becoming cheaper to make a movie/game.

It really doesn't make sense to attribute those job losses to AI-the-technology, because if that were the case we'd be observing AI outputs displacing conventional entertainment products, and they're clearly not. Rather, the impact of AI is that AI-the-business is crowding out other investment.

Is there any particularly good journalism / reporting on Vance and his links to Thiel and the Silicon Valley lot? I feel like he’s getting skimmed over a lot in press coverage and would like to read a deeper dive on his politics. He feels a bit too under the radar for my liking.

"Without due process, you'll have no way of showing ICE that you're a citizen" is pretty effective messaging for normies! Do I wish everyone cared about undocumented migrants as much as they care about themselves? Sure. But they don't, and it's fine to have different messages for different audiences

Peter in the new Fire Emblem is the most relatable character I’ve ever encountered in a videogame, because after doing almost anything he’ll say “Kinda need a snack”

I remember someone said extreme wealth is the equivalent of getting kicked in the head by a horse everyday. Jensen Huang is 63 years old and doesn't know his own address? The only legitimate reason for that at this stage of his life is brain degeneration.

The best way to fight back against the Paramount/Warner Brothers merger is to support independent artists, journalists, writers, filmmakers, musicians and everyone else who has been walking a very hard path to putting things out into the world.

Debra Wilson is the voice of Kira in Dogs in Space and she was an absolute stand-out in a very stacked voice cast. Completely brilliant performer. Cast her in everything! This is my favourite scene she did. Apparently it made her cry when she read it! And it always gets me when I watch it too!

Guess what happens if you try to find evidence of this from a news source that isn't a social media account. If your guess was "there's absolutely fucking nothing", ding ding ding! You're correct! Just because an account has "news" in their name, doesn't mean they're legitimate. Do better, guys.

The umbrella academy driving meme. Chekhov is driving from right to left and making eye contact with Five as he drives left to right.
The captions read:
Top: diversifying into animation because the games industry is a binfire
Bottom: diversifying into games because the animation industry is a binfire.

So I don’t want to comment on that specific case without knowing the full circumstances but I do want to say, in a more general sense, that “someone had the same idea” happens more often than “someone stole your idea”.

If you want a shot of a mouse running along the floor, you could pay a talented VFX artist to do it. You could pay for stock footage. But when you instead choose to pay an "AI" company to generate it for you, you're taking the creative work of others without permission, attribution, or compensation.
