Yeah, the lesson everyone needs to learn is: Don't put any effort into pleasing people who've made it clear they will never be pleased. These folks aren't going to vote, and in many cases can't because they're not American or just kids. They just want to look cool. Let them do so alone.

I think I've told this story here before, but I'll keep telling it until it's no longer relevant. A friend was sent to China for a couple months for a work assignment. After about a month, his Chinese colleagues decided they trusted him enough to start asking questions about American life.

See, I think of Bidenism as spending money to support large-scale investment in renewable energy and manufacturing—stuff that was a departure from previous policies. Policies that are what every previous president would have followed shouldn’t be called “Bidenism” IMO.

“Reaganomics” and “Obamacare” were both attempts to drag down presidents with seemingly unpopular policies but they wound up providing support to those policies among the mass of folks who liked those politicians. 2/2

I haven’t looked at Ossoff’s policies per se, just using him as an example of someone who could come in with a lot of goodwill with factions who hated Biden. While I believe policies are important, I think their (un)popularity derives from who backs them, not the other way around. 1/2

Bidenism without Biden is the way. From talking with my Gen Z son, it seemed Biden was unpopular with young people because he read like a cranky old grandpa. They disliked him and *then* looked for policies to justify that dislike. Dress Bidenism in Ossoff’s skin and it’d be fine.

Biden was unpopular before his policies were even enacted. See: The huge drop in polls after a messy but not catastrophic withdrawal from Kabul. Never had a reservoir of goodwill to draw from. I think the more important question is why.

"We estimate that for each barrel of oil not produced... global oil consumption would drop by 0.2–0.6 barrels over the long term." We're seeing these dynamics, governed in part by elasticities of supply and demand, play out in real time in the extreme, real-world example of the Strait of Hormuz.

Line chart titled "Hourly discourse about The Last Jedi," labelled as satire with made-up data. The complaint index holds near 95 to 100 from 15:00 to 03:00 Moscow time. At 03:00 a red dashed line marks "Ukrainian drones hit Yandex data centres," and the index then falls to about 5 within two hours. A small blip to about 18 at 08:00 is labelled "Backup generator," after which the line flattens near zero. The source line reads: "Institute for Correlation Without Causation. Satire, not analysis."

There is still controversy over the question of whether supply side interventions can make a difference to greenhouse gas submissions. If you understand that the fight for climate stabilization is a political process, it becomes clear that fighting supply side projects is essential.

My mom’s colorful measure of poverty—so poor they didn’t have a pot to piss in—hit different once I realized the farmhouse she grew up in didn’t have an indoor toilet. Between 1940 and, say, 1970, American standard of living just skyrocketed.

One of my pet peeves. In the title “attorney general” general is an adjective—it’s describing the type of attorney. Same for secretary general and (I think*) surgeon general. *SG is part of a uniformed service, but the ranks are naval; apparently the SG is a vice admiral.

It's telling that men would rather try to invent tech to replace humans' role in caregiving than step up as equal partners in parenting. Telling, that is, in that it shows how financial capitalism and patriarchy work together to dissuade men from doing "unprofitable" labor, like the work of care.

Reminded, today, of this poem by Thomas Lux
Plague Victims Catapulted over Walls into Besieged City

Early germ
warfare. The dead
hurled this way turn like wheels
in the sky. Look: there goes
Larry the Shoemaker, barefoot, over the wall,
and Mary Sausage Stuffer, see how she flies,
and the Hatter twins, both at once, soar
over the parapet, little Tommy's elbow bent
as if in a salute,
and his sister, Mathilde, she follows him,
arms outstretched, through the air,
just as she did
on earth.

Are You Kidding Me?
Can this Great Horned Owl's eyes get any bigger?
I'm excited that my photo "Are You Kidding Me?" was selected as one of just 43 finalists in the Nikon Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards, from more than 10,000 entries representing 112 countries!
The story behind it is just as crazy. I was photographing this seven-week-old owlet when a squirrel suddenly launched from a nearby branch and landed directly on its head, knocking both of them out of the tree.
And believe it or not, a squirrel knocked this same owlet out of the tree THREE TIMES that morning! Fortunately, the owlet was fine and eventually settled down next to its mother.
