The U.S. has left Europe’s anti-corruption watchdog. America’s withdrawal from GRECO comes alongside decreases in FCPA enforcement, the end of DOJ’s Kleptocracy Asset Recovery Initiative, and other reductions in U.S. anti-corruption efforts. Read more from Ambassador Marc Ostfield: bit.ly/472N70f

French Historian Marc Bloch, 1940. This is from his book Strange Defeat that tried to make sense of why the French elite succumbed so seemingly easily to the Nazi takeover. Bloch, a nerdy middle aged Sorbonne professor, joined the resistance and was executed by the Gestapo in 1944.
By birth I am a Jew, though not by religion, for I have never professed any creed, whether Hebrew or Christian. I feel neither pride nor shame in my origins. I am, I hope, a sufficiently good historian to know that racial qualities are a myth, and that the whole notion of Race is an absurdity which becomes particularly flagrant when attempts are made to apply it, as in this particular case of the Jews, to a group of co-religionists originally brought together from every corner of the Mediterranean, Turco-Khazar, and Slav worlds. I am at pains never to stress my heredity save when I find myself in the presence of an anti-Semite. But it may be that certain persons will challenge. the evidence which I propose to put on record, and attempt to discredit it on the grounds that I am an 'alien'. I need say no more in rebuttal of such a charge than that my great-grandfather was a serving soldier in
1793; that my father was one of the defenders of Strasbourg in
1870; that both my uncles chose to leave their native Alsace after its annexation by the Second Reich; that I was brought up in the traditions of patriotism which found no more fervent champions than the Jews of the Alsatian exodus, and that France, from which many would like to expel me to-day (and may, for all I know, succeed in doing so), will remain, whatever happens, the one country with which my deepest emotions are inextricably bound up. I was born in France. I have drunk of the waters of her culture. I have made her past my own. I breathe freely only in her climate, and I have done my best, with others, to defend her interests.

#ResistanceRoots Ella Jenkins was born on this day in 1924 in St. Louis, Mo. She was a singer, songwriter, musician and civil rights activist known as the “First Lady of Children’s Music.” She transformed children’s music through interaction, rhythm, community building and global cultures. /1
Ella Jenkins. She integrated traditional African-American call-and-response structures, nursery rhymes and street games like “Miss Mary Mack” into early childhood education. She also used her platform to conduct what scholars call “sonic civil rights pedagogy,” weaving anti-racism, cultural pluralism and democratic ideals into her music to educate the youngest members of society. Her music remains a staple in early childhood and elementary classrooms today. Educators use her extensive catalog not just to teach basic musical concepts, but as a practical framework for child development, emotional regulation and inclusive education.

Zohran Mamdani rebukes Trumpism with pro-immigrant speech for US’s 250th birthday
New York mayor’s speech cut ideological counterpoint to policies of president, who will deliver his own remarks later today New York’s mayor, Zohran Mamdani, exalted the city’s legacy of immigrants on Friday in a historically laden, ideological counterpoint to a US semiquincentennial address that was expected later in the day from Donald Trump – who has sought to deport immigrants en masse throughout his second presidency. Speaking from behind a desk at New York’s city hall that belonged to the US’s first president, George Washington, and which itself is a century older than the Resolute desk in the White House, Mamdani was surrounded by naturalized citizens like himself as he listed the waves of immigrants who shaped the city. I really enjoy EB White's take on New York and New Yorkers.
An excerpt from EB White's Here is New York
There are roughly three New Yorks there is first the New York of the man or woman who was born here who takes the city for granted and accepts its size and its turbulence is natural and inevitable second there is the New York of the commuter the city that is devoured by locusts each day and spat out each night third there is the New York of the person who was born somewhere else and came to New York in quest of something of these three trembling cities the greatest is the last the city of final destination the city that is a goal it is this third city that accounts for New York's high-strung disposition it's poetical deportment it's a dedication to the arts and it's incomparable achievements commuters give the city its title restlessness natives give it solidity and continuity but the settlers give it passion and whether it is a farmer arriving from Italy to set up a small grocery store in a slum or a young girl arriving from a small town in Mississippi to escape the indignity of being observed by her neighbors or a boy arriving from the corn belt with a manuscript in his suitcase and a pain in his heart it makes no difference each embraces New York with the intense excitement of first love each absorbs New York with fresh eyes of an adventurer each generates heat and light to dwarf the consolidated Edison company
