This is exactly it. The work is the point.

When I assign analysis, I am not trying to extract a polished product; I am trying to put the student’s mind through resistance in order to make it stronger. Offloading the struggle to a chatbot does not “free students up for higher-order work.” It deprives them of building the strength to do any substantial cognitive work at all.

I just called my Congressmen about the implicit nuclear threats and impeachment. My Senators will probably do nothing. I spoke to someone in my Representative’s office who said they’re getting many such calls. Maybe I have done nothing, but I can’t sit silently by!

I don't see this said enough: the widespread use of generative AI is not only making our jobs as educators harder logistically, but also emotionally. It is genuinely sad to be suspicious of students when you have spent so much time building a pedagogy based on trust and not being a cop. It sucks.

My take on the cursive discourse is that the most important class I took in high school was typing. I can’t believe how many teens and twentysomethings I see hunt-and-pecking their way around a keyboard. Everyone should be taught touch typing!
