I was vaguely aware that the Glasgow Subway was, when I first went to the city, officially called the Underground. Good to know that almost 7 decades of local bloody mindedness got it changed back to Subway in 2003. Great book so far @jonnelledge.bsky.social

I could not have counted the number of times as a primary school aged kid what I said in everyday conversation was challenged as "not proper English" and to make sure and sound "educated" when I spoke. I'd need to not sound like everyone else to "get on" in life.

I was just thinking when I saw this headline, and my reading on the railway track tension across the UK network. Engineering designed in cooler times is going to be an issue.

Well this is a heatwave problem I did not foresee: the bridge at the entrance to Bristol’s harbour got stuck, because the metal expanded in the heat www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

We recently had a visitor to Bristol from Glasgow, who took a mouthful of our topwater unfiltered. The look of horror on his face! He promptly learned how our filter works!

Also I've been used to this type of alert being for a "right now" emergency. In NZ for Level 4 lockdown in 3 hours or an evacuation order for a tsunami alert. Not just advisory. We'd been discussing the Arab Strap lyric "I remember watching Threads and growing up in fear". Relieved!!

For those overseas: I really cannot stress what a big deal Larry the Cat is in British political life. It's not even a bit. He's an obsession of the 'Westminster bubble' – I'm no exception – but because the British public love animals, beyond that too.

I have barely been in the room when the World Cup footage of other teams has been on. I'm going with 1966. Though with the potential for Argentina if they beat Norway 1986 enters the fray.

There isn't a auK wide scheme, you're probably seeing the English information, and yes it is as awful as it seems. Eligible students pay no fees in Scotland and there are a range of bursaries for living costs, rather than loans.

Excellent pod again. There are a lot of options for constitutional reform which have been on the table for decades largely ignored in England till now. Re No Overall Control - 30 of 32 of the Scottish local councils are NOC, and the majority have been for at least a decade. Just unusual with FPTP

I used to get annoyed at Kiwis being surprised that I felt cold indoors in NZ, because I'm "from Scotland, and should be used to the cold". Aye outside mate, not in my house/the pub/the cinema/work where I have to keep my outside jacket on to be able to function.

I've been astounded by the cost of living in this country compared to the wages available. This ongoing shitshow is where the far right get to inveigle themselves, blaming everyone and everything else but this. Median UK salary £39,000, when part-time work is included £32,890.

The absolute mess of the debt being wiped at privatisation to today where all the revenue goes to shareholders/private equity. What was promised by the neoliberal/third way zealots -that "advantage" of the private sector over the public of capital investment and innovation has simply not appeared.

Similar story here in the UK where the promised infrastructure investment that would come with removing public oversight of water just hasn't kept up with the need. Made worse in England by the privatisation of water.
