It's World Food Day today. It's a time to reflect on the sustenance that food provides along with major gaps in nutrition faced by millions. The Earth’s crop production could be more abundant and secure if we prioritized it more of it feed people rather than feed animals and make fuels

Samah Zaqout recently lost her Substack with its 9K followers, and with it the readership she had built. Subscribe to her new newsletter, where she shares personal stories of loss, fear, displacement, famine, and hope, along with features on life and suffering in Gaza. samazahr.substack.com
Photo captioned "In Gaza, a Cup of Tea Became an Ordeal"
color photo of biscuits and cups of teaBut one thought keeps coming back to me: how did this teapot, which we once used with excitement to make our favorite drinks in minutes, become something we don't even have the energy to use? Now, just lighting a fire feels like too much. We dread how long it takes to boil water over the embers. I understand my sister when she says,
"I'll be craving a warm drink, but after all the waiting, sitting by the fire, and endless hassle, by the time it's ready, I don't even want it anymore." That's exactly how it feels. This war has taken away every beautiful moment, and even the ordinary ones.

The simple routines we once took for granted have become daunting challenges. Waiting for a teapot to boil now feels like an ordeal. Even when we have cooking gas, anxiety lingers-will it run out? We measure what remains, hoping our names will appear on the next distribution list, reminding each other to ration every bit so we are not left stranded.

Sometimes, I find myself gazing into nothing, into so simple things that might seem trivial to others: a teapot, a coffee pot. How did something so basic, once effortless, become a symbol of hardship and daily struggle? During the war, making a single pot of tea could take thirty minutes or even an hour if the fire was weak or the wood too damp.

By the time we finished, our hands would be covered in black soot, our clothes stained, and our eyes streaming with tears from the smoke. I know many people who now require medical treatment for their eyes simply from the smoke of the wood fires. Even now, many families still rely entirely on firewood and fire to survive. Yet, against all logic, preparing a pot of tea remains almost the most sacred ritual of
my day. My husband often tells me, "Samah, I think you have to drink tea every single day-not a single day can pass without it." The truth is, tea was my favorite drink long before the war. My mother and I used to make a pot and sit together for hours, talking.

The back cover of the booklet (excerpt of text):

This booklet is a self-assessment guide to help you gauge your awareness of your neighbors and how deeply connected you are to the people that live on your block. It’s intended for private personal use.
I’ve lived in the same house in Chicago with my wife Jen for 14 years. For about half of these years, I did not know many of my neighbors. Some events changed this. A development was proposed next to our property, and we felt it would be detrimental to the block. We went door to door to get signatures to oppose it. We met many neighbors, and we defeated a terrible project. We also worked with a neighbor to collect signatures to get speed humps for our street. We collected enough signatures because we knew a lot of neighbors. Three years later the city still hasn’t given us speed humps, but at least we still know all those neighbors. Six years ago we adopted a small, cute dog that we walk. He helps us meet our neighbors. I know the names of over 35 nearby dogs and about 60 people on my block. Finally, I became one of the moderators in a private social media group for our neighborhood. It has over 11,000 members. Some of them live on our block.
What would it mean to know every neighbor’s name? I talk to neighbors, but I don’t know everyone. Many people do not know their neighbors but would like to. This publication contemplates what a more detailed ‘knowing’ might be. I want to consider more ways our neighbors could be an immediate resource—particularly should a crisis occur, and as an alternative to depending on police or government agencies to solve problems that we may be able to solve with others through shared labor, mutual aid, understanding and kindness. I’ve seen unlikely friendships develop on my block, and have experienced them myself. I’ve never felt as deeply connected to a place as I do now. I have answers for most of the questions in this booklet.

'We belong to the great web of life' Exploring entanglement with the living world & all beings through collage journaling this morning, using a found page from a nature book as my starting point. Making like this helps me think✂️🖌️ Some new participatory work on this coming soon! #interconnection
Collaged images and text on top of a page from a nature book. The text is cut out/photocopied and comes from various sources, including 'Togetherness: Symbiosis and the Hidden History of Life's Greatest Collaborations' by Rowan Hooper, 'Love Letters to the Earth' from Thich Nhat Hanh, and 'How to Practise: The Way to a Meaningingful Life' by the Dalai Lama. Cut out images on the collage include pictures of amphibiansm birds, mammals, insects and humans. The images and text are arranged informally on top of the book page. Other text, generated by me and printed out, includes the words 'we are not separate' 'we can't be disconnected' and 'we belong to the great web of life'

To end factory farming, we need to be eating more plants. Swipe through for some of the benefits of adding more plants to your plate 👉 #WorldVegetarianDay
A green background features a white circle with text reading, "Why you should eat more plants this World Vegetarian Day." A fork holds a piece of broccoli at the top, and three carrots with green tops are positioned at the bottom left. Greenhouse gas emissions chart for six diets: High Meat Eater (7.19 kg), Medium Meat Eater (5.63 kg), Low Meat Eater (4.67 kg), Fish Eater (3.91 kg), Vegetarian (3.81 kg), Vegan (2.89 kg) in terms of CO2 equivalents per day per person. Text below highlights that the livestock sector contributes to 14.5% of human-induced greenhouse gases, and reducing meat and dairy consumption can lower emissions.Infographic showing how 100 calories of grains fed to animals result in humans receiving only 3-25 calories in meat. Illustrations of grains, a chicken, a pig, and a cow are depicted. Text highlights global grain waste, noting the UK uses over half its grain for animal feed, wasting 8.3 million tonnes—more than the UK's 6.4 million tonnes of household food waste. Infographic showing capsules with silhouettes of a chicken, cow, and pig. Text states, "Globally, around 70% of all antimicrobials are used in farm animals." Additional text discusses dependency on antimicrobials in industrial livestock production due to poor conditions.

What eliminated most of Ireland's forests *wasn't* the axe or saw, but livestock or too many deer preventing trees from regenerating by eating every seedling. Over 100s of years, the forests just faded away, and this process is still playing out with most of what very little is left.
